If you were going to set off around the world.

Been thinking about it and you're right. I agree, I would probably choose a 300tdi to go around the world in as well. Except I'd want it in a Discovery (y)

It's funny you should say that Jim as my 90 was once a MY85 V8 Manual before it was converted using a 300Tdi and Auto box from a D1. There's not much of the original truck left to be honest; just a few bits n' bobs:

It’ll break down before you get out of the drive. :xgrin:

You could put 2kg of fine sand down the oil filler cap of my truck and it would still run smooth (in a clunky type of 300Tdi fashion :xgrin:).

It's going to be hot in some places on a trip like that.

So I'd want a series 3 long wheelbase (room for comfy bed in the back) Landy with the safari roof.

I learnt to drive in one and it was my first car after I passed my test (in the early 90s). 0-60 in a fortnight and it took half a mile to stop... but my parents' thinking was I couldn't be a boy racer in it and I would come off best in any accident. Plus with 12 seats I was always popular for lifts to parties!

Probably my favourite car in almost 30 years of driving. And as others have said, a lump hammer and length of wood is all you need for most running repairs. I know from experience it can do a couple of hundred yards on three wheels should one come off and overtake you.

Proly a white van from Fiat.. Good for carrying expected junk, good to kip in, good for 1/2 a million miles..
About the only mod I would make is to fit Hankook M & S tyres to it

Yes, boring I know, but having been over goat trails up mountains** in our tag I reckon it would cope

**
When we took the road there was NO signs to say what we were getting in to.. When we finally got down the other side there was massive signs up
ONLY SUITABLE FOR 4 X 4vehicles WITH OFF ROAD EXPERIENCED DRIVERS

I change of underpants, 5 minutes levering Maureens hands off the handles and getting the blood back in to her fingers, and we were off again

Is the bucket for Oil leaks?

Now that I know @Jim is a pure bred Landy-Man then I think you may just get banned for that post; perhaps for a short period to begin with, say 15-years.:sneaky:.........:xgrin:

Every Landrover enthusiast knows that a Landrover never leaks.

............but they do scent their territory from time to time using a substance which just so happens to look like an oily black residue.:xThumb:

My truck is for off-road only.

Cheers,

Andrew

We nave two friend's who did it twice, in a V8 Discovery, also did up and down America, plus Europe/Africa.
Yep, That doesn't surprise me. I've heard it's not easy to find spares for 'em.

I've never not owned a Defender since I passed my test in one aged 17. No bigger fan in the world. Would I go around the world in one, not a chance. :D

I would go in an Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Set off from Cheshire looking stylish......and no need to take a passport:)

To save you asking The Scion xB was found to be the most reliable car on the road by Consumer Reports

They never succeeded in killing a Hilux on (old) Top Gear although they tried very hard...

That's because the top gear lads are wusses I managed to kill one, and that's our old caravan up the road that parked itself quite neatly after It came off.

Funny you should say that as I've just had 2 x Hankook winter tyres fitted about1k ago & well pleased. Might get the back 2 changed for the same before I venture abroad again.
** & yes I know they should have gone on the back but they are nearly new anyway **
& I'd agree with the fairly simple older type ,easily repairable model. Bit like what I already have . Fiat Talento base ( Ducato) I wouldn't worry about going anywhere in the oneI have at present.

I used to go into the bush in Australia to recover vehicles , what vehicle Defender 130 DC 300tdi Hi cap , only 4x4 vehicle legally capable of towing trailer with other 4x4 on top .(other than HGV) .
:) also with the load capacity for suitable fuel range without prearranged fuel drop point!
Good lord them sheilas go for it a tad dont they!!

Congratulations, you should write and tell Jeremy! I watched the whole operation, they drowned it, dropped it off a block of flats and all sorts of other attempts and it started after about 30 minutes with a mechanic every time. That's why it was hung on the wall in the Top Gear studio!

Back in the 60s the company dad worked for in Nigeria ran a fleet of landrovers. From time to time they needed to have the chassis taken off in the workshop and rejigged to make it straight again. Bush roads, eh.

Stolen from the disco 3/4 forum (I have a disco 4 incidentally) 'Land Rover, turning drivers into mechanics since 1947'

That's because you wouldn't even get out of the county before something major fell off.

Next time you go give us a shout :xThumb:

I am a Toyota fan as well.

At the moment the car is a Peugeot but if Toyota did something similar in space and shape and cost I would change it today.

I just wish the Japanese made good sized vans like the Fiat (not badge engineered) they would take the market.
