Lets say there was zero cost for electric.

Would you prefer to leave your heating on 365 days a year so it never gets cold or damp?

There is the obvious extra wear on the heater. But how robust are they? We have a 2015 Swift Escape 696 with a Truma combi heater and it runs well. I dare say in winter if I set it to just maintain 15 degs to keep a decent temperature to keep the whole van warm but without whacking the machine to much it would do ok.

Or would I kill its life by a long way? Come warmer months it would probably never even have to turn on. But during these cold months is it worth it?

Never heated MH in winter, empty all bedding ect, leave all seating and cushions in. Open all lockers, doors including fridge, microwave, oven. This year have just left four old ice cream tubs nearly full of salt which worked a treat with just one with actual liquid in and the others just crusty, cheapest tip I've ever had but I did check every month.

Leaving the heating on in an extended stay at a storage yard is not possible. So what would others suggest for that. We intend to leave the van in storage while we take a winter break in the sun for 4 months.currently looking for indoor storage.

Just open all cupboard and locker doors open , We never put the heating on ,but I do put the covers on the fridge vents outside to avoid ingress of driving rain . We put a couple of those 90p damp detectors in and fit the silver screen that's it . Check it when I feel like it .Never had a problem yet lol.
