Random I know but setting off tomorrow and was thinking if there was a problem what would I do? In the uk if ring 999.
What about Holland, France. Austria or Germany?

Thanks in advance - happy travels x

Wow - brilliant information.
I knew about the ice numbers but the rest of it has definitely put my mind at rest.
Still hoping I ever have to use them though

Another possibility if you have a long term medical condition subscribe to www.medicalert.org they are a charity, they provide bracelets or necklaces with basic info engraved together with an emergency 24 hour phone number where full details can be accessed. Worthwhile insurance in my opinion.

I was unconscious for several days from a m/bike accident in Spain and the hospital used the ICE numbers for my sons that I had put on my locked phone.

How did the hospital access your ICE numbers if the phone was locked? Can emergency services bypass the lock?

We have Moto G phones, the ICE and emergency numbers can be accessed without unlocking. May be possible on other makes
Thank you for that very helpful info. - have now added ours in the Emergency section rather than just in Contacts list & can access without login (y) Making sure it's just numbers with Next Of Kin so security not compromised.
Great info. on this thread - will be passing it on & making sure family & friends know to sort their phones & about 112 . Crazy that we have so many apps but didn't have this sorted before!

Would a UK undertaker come out to Portugal ?

No - he doesn't need to. The vast bulk of them belong to a cross Europe network where each helps out other members when needed. There's a central number who contact the counterparts elsewhere and each drives the plain black van as far as they are legally able to another member in the next country where the body and necessary paperwork are transferred to the next van, discreetly behind close doors.

Some families opt for hearse transfer, which takes ages because they don't travel very fast - the hearses can quite easily but it offends onlookers - hence it costs the bereaved family a lot more than van transfer.

Or at least - this was the situation in the 1990s when Sedge was insurance broker to a UK network of FDs.
