Ideas for Normandy

Last week stayed at the municipal campsite at Bayeux, still very busy. ACSI discount avaiable. B8AFBFB9-0780-46A9-B14C-A7224F85BA8D.jpegMagnificent cathedral and Bayeux tapestry, free entry on Sunday. Supermarket, McDonalds, Chinese buffet etc all close by. Free entry to excellent swimming pool.20 minute walk from site to city centre along small river. On route you pass by the aire which is free and even closer but not very attractive.

We’re in St Valery sur somme now been to market this morning. For us it’s the best of the lot on the coast always stop on the way back.
We cycled to St Valery Sur Somme from the Camping Car-Park aire at Le Crotoy today. The market was very busy, a great vibe though.
Both towns are very interesting and pleasant places to be. 👍🏻

we actually pulled up and went into the aire this morning, cycled down the hill and along the front to the left, came back and saw the edge of the market and decided we should move on, and it was raining but nothing serious.

So 20 mins later we pulled into the aire at Le Croytoy and after cycling 2/3 mins decided we’d made the right decision, Sat at a lovely Rick Stein recommended restaurant (so we were told by the next table Suffolk couple) and had a lovely meal and drinks in the glorious sunshine.

Both Saint Valerie En Caux and Sur Somme didn’t really have enough for us but i’m glad we did them 👍

Le Touque tomorrow unless someone tells us somewhere better 👍

Good choice. Moored in the Marina many times over the years many happy memories and where one William the Conqueror set sail from for his holiday !
thanks everyone for the suggestions, we are not interested in looking at WW2 memorials or museums, sorry if this goes against the grain but I didn’t ask for that tbh.

We spent last night in Dieppe and enjoyed it their, we are now at Le Touquet and a nice cycle ride along the front as far as we could, then called in a bar or 2 for coffees n crepes then a couple of pints

There’s a campsite next door with a bar that opens at 6.30 so will try that before settling down for the night

Next stop is Saint Valerie Sue Somme tomorrow, the weather is typically english, cool and overcast with slight showers but it’s not spoiling things, I’ve said to Val it’d be a completely different place in the sunshine 😉

Al 👍
Saint Valerie Sur Somme is one of our favourites and always on our stopover list-we were there 2 weeks ago. Some good flat cycling round the bay-but the walk from the aire to town and back may be a bit problematic if walking is an issue. The aire does have some electrical points on the first 2 rows-you will be lucky to get one though. Have a good trip-we are at Rocomador tonight and heading slowly north-need to be home by Friday evening.

Even though I was born in 1945 I'm exactly the same.
I've sailed, motorbiked, hotel'd and m/homed around all of Normandy (and most of France) for around 40 years and have no inquisitiveness whatsoever in looking at distressing wartime museums, memorabilia, gun emplacements, crumbling concrete bunkers, souvenir shops, acres of cemeteries or rusting tanks.
My son on the other hand is very interested in both the wars and when we had to cancel a Loire Valley motorbike camping trip at short notice he suggested we took the m/h and toured the Somme area (Amiens, Albert, Arras, Ypres etc.). As the m/bike trip was intended as his 40th birthday event I agreed. I think I succeeded in looking interested.

I find all the little fishing harbours enchanting and most of the inland medieval towns and villages, rivers and countryside. So much fresh fish and shellfish and so many cheeses and patisseries to enjoy and brocantes and vide greniers to browse, if that's your thing.
I never make any sort of plan but just wander. The beauty of the m/h (for most of us I expect) is that when I come upon somewhere that looks interesting I can always find somewhere to stop for a couple of nights.
We’re off end of oct. We have a ferry into dieppe then home a week later from Caen. If you had to recommend a few of the best little villages with nice restaurants/bar, where would they be? Love fishing ports and old villages. Ideally ones with an aire.

Cheers

La Rochelle is nice and has a good aire/park & ride.
Oh wait a minute, you did say that you had travelled up from Hornfleur to Dieppe and was wanting suggestions between Dieppe and Calais so god knows why you’re accused of being rude when someone suggests completely the wrong area?
There seems to be a lot who are eager to jump on someone for some of their posts recently. Maybe they should read the post? It’s called FUN for a reason folks!

OP - I’d suggest a quick look on Campercontact or park4night. We usually use Le Touquet as our first stop when travelling from Calais but I believe Boulogne is worth a visit.

Thanks for the support Gav, sometimes I often wonder what goes through peoples minds tbh, we are all different though so I reread my posts before posting and try to be careful not to offend or upset anyone, sometimes though it’s impossible 😉

ATM we are sat on the aire at Le Crotoy waiting for the rain to stop as it’s gusting windy and rain as I type this, we had a lovely afternoon here though and I suppose it’s one i’d recommend.

Having a coffee then onwards to Le Touqet and hope the weather clears up so we can get out n about

If this weather is set for the week we’ll probably cut our week short and book a tunnel

And for all those who I might have upset regarding the weather, tough tittie, we are fair weather travellers so please don’t post unless you are and it’s something positive 🤣 😉

Has the bread man been this morning ,The choc au pain are the best ever .

Well the rain eased so I cleaned our plastic double step and put it away in the garage before setting off for Le Touquet.

The journey was absolutely ruined by one of the most torrential rainstorms I can remember driving in in all my 52 years of driving

WOW!!

But arrived we have and it’s not raining atm so ventured out into town and so far it’s looking positive 👍👍

Question

we are parked not on the aire but carried on through and there is a road up to the left, does anyone know if you have to pay in that area as the aire is empty and 4 vans were parked on the road side
