So currently we are in Dieppe on the marina aire having made our way up from Honfleur via Saint Valery En Caux

We have a week or so to fill but not fixed, so can you well travelled folk recommend any nice coastal aire/towns preferably close to the centre as walking is an issue atm

It’s first time for us so complete Normandy novices

We’ve been given, Le Tréport, Saint Valery Sur Somme, Le Touqet, Le Crotoy, finishing at Calais or somewhere close

many thanks

Al 👍

Can't help with exact place locations , obviously much WW2 history to look at including the beaches and museums ..

Small but quiet Aire with plenty of overflow for parking if necessary, 5 minutes from a lovely small town, lots of shops/Cafes/ Restaurants and only 5 minutes walk from Aire and flat.

Envious , doesn't matter where you go it's all spectacular , pointe du hoc was particularly memorable as was the immaculate American cemetery, looking at the amount of gravestones with June 6th engraved on them is very sad

This isn't a lot of help because I can't remember which one it was but one of the D Day museums was particularly interesting because not only were the stories and pictures fascinating but there were also pictures of the same soldiers as old men proudly standing with their medals which added an extra dimension to their story

We were there 10 days in 2019 and I loved every minute of it, especially not being in a single traffic jam

We saw the Bayeux Tapestry today and staying in a lovely private house 10euros 5 minutes from town centre
Room for 5 van no one else here
Sat nav N 49 degrees 14’ 53”
West 0 degrees 43’ 4”
Montajmahal in Bayeux but not for larger than 7 m I would say

We were there today as well!!

We went to the British Normandy Memorial today at Ver-Sur-Mer, it only opened last year. It's very impressive and very moving (also very windy!).

It has 10 dedicated motor home parking spaces. Parking costs €3 all day but no overnight parking is allowed. The parking charge goes towards the upkeep of the memorial.

We stopped in Pont L'Eveque for some lunch, there is parking in the centre of the town and it's a lovely old town to look round.

thanks everyone for the suggestions, we are not interested in looking at WW2 memorials or museums, sorry if this goes against the grain but I didn’t ask for that tbh.

We spent last night in Dieppe and enjoyed it their, we are now at Le Touquet and a nice cycle ride along the front as far as we could, then called in a bar or 2 for coffees n crepes then a couple of pints

There’s a campsite next door with a bar that opens at 6.30 so will try that before settling down for the night

Next stop is Saint Valerie Sue Somme tomorrow, the weather is typically english, cool and overcast with slight showers but it’s not spoiling things, I’ve said to Val it’d be a completely different place in the sunshine 😉

it's a bit like going to Paris and not seeing the Tour Eiffel or going to London and not seeing Big Ben ( Queen Elizabeth tower to be exact ) as Big Ben is the bell ..

I have to disagree the examples you have set out would be obvious places to visit as a Tourist but visiting WW2 places of unbelievable and unimaginable History and loss of life do not compare and it would be a very emotional journey and perhaps too much for some.
All the WW2 History aside it’s a great region to visit and to enjoy.

Good choice. Moored in the Marina many times over the years many happy memories and where one William the Conqueror set sail from for his holiday !

That is a rude reply when you are being offered ideas !! Maybe if you had stated that in your opening post then it's likely that you would not have been offered those suggestions.

I never meant to be rude so sorry if i’ve offended anyone, but if i’d have wanted ref to WW2 memorabilia i’d have mentioned it surely in my OP

Dammed if I do and damned if i don’t it seems 😟

indeed, some people are overly sensitive and read what they want, pretty much why I try and keep my mouth shut a lot of the time, think it's a great forum, certainly provides somewhere for people to whinge so in that sense it's probably making up for a lot of care in the community ::bigsmile: ::bigsmile: ::bigsmile: ::bigsmile:

Anyway, dunno if this will help of not but Im planning to leave for the Normandy coast area and made a map of places I want to go, plan is to take it easy plan day by day. Only have a week so it will be day by day planning.

Now you're in Picardy (pedantic, moi?!) it’s a little difficult to get flat along the coast - but we love Amiens (not far up the Somme) there’s a good parkup at
49.8939, 2.2869 (lat, lng)
N 49° 53' 38" E 2° 17' 13" (lat lng)
93 Boulevard Faidherbe

France
Very close to town, no services but can be a bit busy - maybe by this time of year would be a bit easier. Certainly good for exploring the town during the day. We stayed at Camping des Cygnes that has a fab, cheap and regular bus route into the city. Also a good, flat cycle track. We also like Boulogne-sur-Mer. There’s a nice Aire Municipale (cheap, with services) on the cliffs just north with a not-too-steep walk (depending on one’s mobility) up from the town. Great location Aire Moulin Wibert
50.7435, 1.5969 (lat, lng)
N 50° 44' 37" E 1° 35' 49" (lat lng)
Boulevard Sainte-Beuve

Lots to see that’s not WW1/2-related

Even though I was born in 1945 I'm exactly the same.
I've sailed, motorbiked, hotel'd and m/homed around all of Normandy (and most of France) for around 40 years and have no inquisitiveness whatsoever in looking at distressing wartime museums, memorabilia, gun emplacements, crumbling concrete bunkers, souvenir shops, acres of cemeteries or rusting tanks.
My son on the other hand is very interested in both the wars and when we had to cancel a Loire Valley motorbike camping trip at short notice he suggested we took the m/h and toured the Somme area (Amiens, Albert, Arras, Ypres etc.). As the m/bike trip was intended as his 40th birthday event I agreed. I think I succeeded in looking interested.

I find all the little fishing harbours enchanting and most of the inland medieval towns and villages, rivers and countryside. So much fresh fish and shellfish and so many cheeses and patisseries to enjoy and brocantes and vide greniers to browse, if that's your thing.
I never make any sort of plan but just wander. The beauty of the m/h (for most of us I expect) is that when I come upon somewhere that looks interesting I can always find somewhere to stop for a couple of nights.

We’re in St Valery sur somme now been to market this morning. For us it’s the best of the lot on the coast always stop on the way back.
