I may be wrong but.....have I prejudged

Maybe the French authorities don’t tolerate them causing any mayhem unlike are pc brigade ?

Under French law their "Gens de Voyage" have to be registered permanently with a Commune. Not producing valid paperwork when demanded by Police is a serious offence. They have their own designated Aires, as you may have noticed. The French system has built-in incentives to be law abiding because they expect to be stopped at random and checked, and are easily traceable. All in all, a better system than in the UK.

Last month on the Municipal at Saintes (Dept 17) I saw Police cars or vans patrolling the campsite roads daily, which seemed a bit unusual. Sometimes it was the Municipal Police, sometimes the National Police. I had noticed that a large group of Travellers had taken over the car park of a derelict business beside the main road into town. 12 days later the illegal encampment was still there when I drove out of town. There had been a recent spate of thefts suspected of being linked to the Travellers, according to some French blokes I spoke to, hence the pro-active Police activity. I couldn't say for certain that theTravellers on that illegal encampment were Irish rather than French, but it seemed more likely.

The French police will turn up with clear warnings not to cause problems etc. and, according to other reports on this forum, will draw their weapons to show that they are serious. The UK police seem to roll out red carpets and regard the issue as a civil matter.
Yes even if the vehicles have no MOT & tax as in Nuneaton (shifty) ?

A few years ago I phoned the Caravan Club to book a pitch at their Cherry Hinton, Cambridge site. Among the many questions she insisted on asking me was “what make of Motorhome do you have?” I was getting a bit fed up by this time and annoyed at using up my precious minutes on my mobile phone. She insisted that she needed to know the make because if it was a Hobby I would not be allowed to stay. It transpired that a few weeks previously the site had been taken over by “travellers” and they all had Hobby motorhomes. The Club had adopted a new policy of declining Hobby motorhomes and caravans.

Should be impounded as any other vehicle would be.
When I looked at that story, numerous people had checked the vehicle registrations in press photos against the DVLA database and had informed the police via Twitter they were illegal.

IMHO, the police let them get away with too much. The law should be changed to make trespass etc a criminal offence.

There was certainly govt consultations going on last year about that situation.

When I started this post I didn't really expect to find that this is a widespread problem on campsites.
When I booked our stay at Ladram Bay I was able to chose the pitch I wanted using their online map. Now the school holidays have started there will be people arriving to take up their chosen pitch and they may now find it is already occupied by travellers. I'm sure that the site will be running at pretty near full occupancy now so new arrivals may not be able to be offered an alternative pitch. What a crap scenario and I feel for them.

Few years back, we stayed in aires next door to local police station in France. We only had one large old motorhome near us, with what seemed like 20 kids. The little ones came over to us and all spoke french, the wife went out and talked to them, they were very well behaved and not a problem but they were very interested in our Pointer dog. We thought they were gypsies, but kept to themselves apart from the little uns.

We had a Hobby caravan 15 years ago it was the same at some places then used to really annoy me.

I guess you're thinking that he would round them up and out them in permanent camps.

It`s a sure bet none of our "Snowflake" politicians would have the "Cojones" to do it!. They don`t need permanent camps when they can infest and make a local Park Unsafe for kids, leaving behind Drug Detritus from their dealing. (HULL East Park 2017).

So you are suggesting a return of concentration camps as a solution, perhaps a final one?

No, just suggesting, they wont use "proper" camps anyway, especially if they are expected to pay towards their upkeep, It goes against their FLT attitudes generally. Although, Maybe your suggestion does have Legs? Hmmmm? After all, those who would supply drugs and paraphernalia in an area used by kids, don`t really deserve much else. No arrests, just took the council weeks to move them and months to ensure the area was again safe for Play.

So why your suggestion that our "snowflake" politicians need to grow a pair?

If you want to solve the drug problem look to Portugal, decriminalise all drugs and treat it as a health issue - reduced crime, HIV and drug deaths.

What "snowflake" politicians are you referring to? The problem of traveller invasions has been going on for at least 20 years and hasn't been tackled.

It's not just about having to pay. The halting site provided by the Bristol City Council (free, no site fees) is empty because the Council made a rule that Travellers must register on arrival.

Oh. Where is it? Can WE park there overnight? We are 'travellers' if in mh's methinks.

This is a serious question albeit diverse. :- .. .. trying to park in Bristol is difficult.

So if your grandkids, get hepA or some such from falling on a discarded drug needle you would be OK with that?.

The Nazis weren’t snowflakes and threw people into camps . . . foreigners taking their jobs, gypsies, the shirkers and the weak. And then eradicated them. Disgusting stuff.

We don’t know how lucky we are living in a society that respects people of all walks of life and the rule of law. Of course people will abuse any system, it’s part of human nature. It doesn’t mean the system is wrong, that’s the mistake that people make. People who want to live in a police state can move to any number of oppressive countries. It wouldn’t be long before they moved back. It’s all talk.

One of the many ills of the modern world is that every Thomas, Richard and Henry demands rights but seems to refuse to accept rsponsibilities. This is reinforced by politicians enabling Human Rights acts without mentioning the necessary counterpart.

BTW why does trespass appear to be a civil matter for the common herd until one of them climbs the wall of Buck House?
