Hymer S820 P'ex

Many thanks Mark, I'll have to see what motorcycle I end up with first and then look at securing solutions. I'm considering the KTM 390 adventure at the moment if it will fit in there.
Just get one of these, no problem
<Broken link removed>

Just measured up, width is 930mm between the gas springs which hold the door open, height is 1150mm at the opening, increasing slightly one you are in. We have a pair of ebikes on a pull out rack in our garage which fit comfortably height wise.

Thanks Mark, that might make the KTM 390 adventure a little too big I think they are 1400mm I'll have to go and measure one.

Thanks again

Chris

If you saw the size of me you'd reconsider that advice :giggle:
Yes, my previous bike was a KTM 950 super enduro, I didn’t meet many other people that could actually get on it, but I can still ride a monkey bike,

Hi all, so I finally got a chance to view it and have a test drive today, I was very impressed with it, it drives like it's brand new and not a squeak or a rattle to be heard. There are a few issues with it as one might expect from a 16 year old motorhome, but nothing too major, and those that I did find they've agreed to do, they are also fitting a gaslow system and a gas BBQ point for me so I've put my hand in my pocket and bought it :giggle: delivery is looking like mid to late May.

I have to say they were mega busy, loads of people looking, and I overheard some people agreeing to a purchase, I was expecting it to be quiet on a Monday morning but they were rushed off there feet and the weekend had been even busier apparently.

Did you check all the areas I said water ingress signs through garage\locker doors, blown double glazed glass side windows, tyre age, etc

How exciting. Just be mindful that all vans after a few years start costing money to upkeep so do not be disappointed if things go bang. Just forked out for new batteries on mine, we bought it new five years ago and things just do not last forever. If you have never owned a van or caravanned before do not just go out and buy things that you may think you need wait until using the van you soon establish what you will find useful. You state you are having gas low, good sensible decision but did you order two bottles (13KG)?. If that is what you have already assessed you need that amount of LPG on board thats great but many find one large bottle will last ages and refilling in the UK takes a bit of planning ahead you to find LPG so one bottle could be ample at this time thus saving an outlay of £180 for something else on mainland Europe LPG is plentiful. Later if you find you need an extra bottle you will have the experience to buy the additional bottle and instal yourself its very simple.

Just a thought

I did indeed, it's mostly in very good condition, no water ingress that we could find, (I took my nephew with me to get underneath and have a good look at every thing) pretty much everything works as it should, but the front tyres are old (2008) and worn on the inside, I mentioned the previous advisory for ball joints to them, they have agreed to sort that out, there is a seal or trim where the back panel meets the bottom panel that's perished and they've agreed to replace that and the only other issue were the hand brake actuator gaiters were both split and they've agreed to sort that as well, they reiterated that it would come with a new MOT with no advisories, they seem to have a good reputation as far as I can tell so at the moment I'm quite happy with it, no doubt things will go wrong, it's quite old but my experience with cars is it doesn't really matter how old they are as long as you can keep on top of the maintenance, my car is 1994 vintage with over 200,000 on the clock but it's mega reliable, I would be confident driving it anywhere with the minimum of prep.

It is exciting thank you, whilst I've never owned a motorhome before, I've been camper vanning most of my adult life starting with a bay window VW back in the day and touring in Europe several times so not completely new to it. I will take your advice though and establish a requirement before buying stuff I think I might need.

Nice one, double glazed glass winfows are a fortune unless you do them yourself,

sounds like you have got a good one. Are they replacing all the tyres?

the rears are 2016 and still have loads of tread and no cracking so I'd be happy to leave those on for the time being. It really surprised me just how well it drives and how quiet it was, I was expecting a few creaks and rattles but it was really quiet.

Hi ChrisL,
As mentioned previously I have the S650 version of this model.
It's a very heavy van and I found mine to wallow around a bit when driving.
Fitting Aeon rubber spring assistors in place of the bump stops solved the problem at very little cost, around £100 or so and very easy to fit
Yours is on the heavier chassis so you may not have this issue, just thought I'd mention it in case you do.

Thank you all for your support and suggestions, I will get around to joining the Hymer owners group, and I may fit air assist or the rubber spring assistors, I think I need to put a few miles on it first to see how it drives when it's loaded. Once I've got a collection date I'm going to book it in for a Vanbitz growler and I'll also get SAP to fit some levelling jacks.

It's all good this week, I've got my second jab on Friday, finally a light at the end of the tunnel, I hope I get to meet some of you on my travels, keep well all :giggle:

Congratulation on the new addition to the family.

Whilst you are at VanBitz I'd also get a solar panel and a Battery Master fitted, as well as a MetaTrac tracker.
It will be money well spent.

The Hymer Owner Group with over 10,000 members is a very good source of technical info for all things Hymer related.

It has a solar panel, I will ask vanbitz to look over what it has fitted in the way of solar controllers, and perhaps add another panel and a dual solar controller rather then a battery master, I must confess that I'll probably be using a fair amount of electric as I use a computer to record and mix music as well as watching tv, surfing the net, emails etc. Currently it has 2 x LDF90's so I may upgrade those, there is room for three batteries of similar dimensions, I'll have to give it a couple of weeks to see how my actual usage v input works out. And yes I will be asking them to fit the tracker and immobiliser as well.

Well done that man

if they don’t change the older tyres I would drive home via a tyre place and get them swapped 👍

another tip, should you join HOG, be careful with your words, particularly if you use Travel World, the group is censored by the service manager from TW and he doesn’t take kindly to even reasonable criticism of TW or Hymer 🤔👍

For the sake of the £60 a Battery Master costs, I'd get one fitted by VanBitz, it will mean your solar panel(s) will balance your charge to both engine and leisure batteries.

My van, having been laid up for nearly 7 months due to the Pandemic had fully charged batteries and started first time. £60 well spent !

Because of the position of the habitation batteries in the external pull out drawer you can can have wet ones, I have x2 6 volt Rolls Surrette, great set up, easy to access and check the distilled water levels.

No its not.

No its not.

It was when he got me booted off with no comment or comeback 4 years ago

Maybe things have changed or the admin are or were easily swayed 🤔 I never got a chance to discuss or even told why I wasn’t wanted

Hi all, the big day is tomorrow, they sent me a thank you video/virtual handover and will give me a proper hand over tomorrow, they appear to have done everything they said they would and fixed some things I didn't spot to get it through the MOT with no advisories, so a big preliminary thank you to MDG at Poole.

I have a 2001 S650, very similar van apart from being just 6.5 meters long and on a lighter chassis.
Absolutely the best van I've ever had and would only change it for a slightly newer model, they stopped making them in 2006 as too expensive to produce and make a decent profit.
The S820 would be too long for me as I don't need the fixed rear double bed but I can't recommend the model enough.
I have loads of info if you need it , just pm me.
Hi hymerman, you have loads of info ? On the S820?
That's very nice to know. I just bought me a S820...
Would like to ask you, is there any chance that I could find the sales brochure anywhere?

Waiting in advance,.
Peter

Hi Pete, welcome to the forum I hope you enjoy your S820, I don't have any brochures unfortunately but I do have a small piece of advise, so far my S820 has been pretty reliable, however you may be aware that they have air brakes at the rear, I had the misfortune of suffering a broken air line while in France, this ended up costing nearly €2000 and over a week out of my trip. I would strongly recommend that you get your air lines replaced as a priority, they are not expensive to replace by themselves but with the additional damage caused by the recovery guy trying to free the brakes off i ended up with a large bill. If you have any specific queries please feel free to pm me. I would also advise you to subscribe here, members are always willing to help if you need it.

Hi Peter S820,

I also have a S820. There is a brochure PDF on line somewhere. I have a printed out copy also. I am away currently but will see if I can find the PDF once I am back home.

I have had mine for about 4 years now and know about most of its peculiarities. Let me know if there is anything you specifically need to know.

Mark.

Many thanks, Chris,
That is what we call valuable info ....
I will check them lines asap.

Nice regards.

The glass double glazed cab side windows mist up badly, I have seen S820s where you couldn’t see out at all, total MOT failure.

Hi Mark, now that would be very kind.
If you would look it up for me. ( Hope you don't forget it )🙏
So you had yours for 4 years? May I ask, why did you sell it ?

Kind regards from the Netherlands.
