Hymer
After breaking down in our beloved Hymer at the weekend, the garage have rung to say she needs a new engine and they can't source one due to her age (1990.) Anyone have any ideas where we could source one? She's a B644 A-class Fiat model, 2.5 L. The van is generally in good nick and has been well looked after, but due to her age things naturally reach the end of their useful live. Such as the engine  Any help/advice/emotional support much appreciated!

The main bearing has gone and we were categorically told it can't be repaired. It's a motorhome service centre who have done plenty of work on her before. She's done about 190K miles.

No such thing as it can’t be overhauled. If you saw how industrious people can be, there’ll be someone who do it.

Got on Google, then get on the phone and good luck.

I wouldn't have thought Main Bearings would write off an engine, shop around for an independent garage with an old school mechanic, an easy enough job.
190K isn't a big mileage for a diesel.
Thanks - very happy to try and find someone to fix her! Thanks for the reply

Might be worth a phone call.

How about the Fiat owners Club. They may have a handle on bits or old analogue mechanics.
There is also an 08000 number for Fiat that goes straight through to a helpline in Milan. Very, very nice and helpful people.

As long as the crankshaft if not damaged it should be possible to regrind it and fit oversized bearings. And while doing it might as well get it rebored and new piston rings.
Just need to find someone who can do it, not easy these days.

I just did a Google search for "diesel engine rebuilding" I surprised at the number of results. Some of them offer reboring so should be able to do a crank regrind.

When I had my classic car restoration business not so many years ago,I was reconditioning engines from all era and one of the last I reconditioned was from 1919, so I would be more than a bit surprised if a 1990 engine could not be reconditioned.

If you are being told by your garage it cannot be repaired it may be because the crankcase has been damaged with the main bearings failing , which would not be a simple repair , but may be possible in the correct hands.
