Hymer is 14 years old with original tyres. 25000 mileage. Really good tread, Michelin Agilis Camping tyres, No cracks, had them checked recently, no advice notes on MOT. So is there any law saying they have to be changed after so many years? It's an expensive commodity to change the 4 if there isn't any need? Any advice, should I change them or not??

Apologies - I've just seen that my previous but one post - which I thought was a link to a Govt. Dept's views on tyre degradation - was only a link to the search page.

You'd expect tyre manufacturers to have a vested interest in promoting a low age interval. But the link is to an independent study - even though it does use industry data.

I hope this works :-

My main garage for MOT and repair refuse to fit tyres over 7 years old. You can't see inside them for starters along with rim "trash" building up near the beads.

The law of self preservation appears to apply. Not to mention the safety of other road users.

It could be that a law on tyre age will be introduced at some stage in the future. New regulations regarding tyres have been introduced on two occasions in the past. No doubt there will be those who will not be pleased at yet more "red tape" but I'm old enough to remember the state of some tyres on pre "10 yr Test" cars before 1960.

I was living in Trinidad, in the mid 1970s, when they introduced a Vehicle Test. I recall walking alongside a queue of cars, during the first week, and being amazed at how some of them had managed to make it to the testing centre.

When I changed our tyres last year, the tread was fine, but when they came off , the fitter showed me the cracking around the bead,,it was quite bad,,unseen damage, but deadly.
