Hymer 522
Hymer is 14 years old with original tyres. 25000 mileage. Really good tread, Michelin Agilis Camping tyres, No cracks, had them checked recently, no advice notes on MOT. So is there any law saying they have to be changed after so many years? It's an expensive commodity to change the 4 if there isn't any need? Any advice, should I change them or not??

No law at all, but I would definitely change them owing to the age as rubber does perish over time. Really surprised that there is no fine cracking at that age.

From a legal point of view, so long as they meet the MOT requirements then no offence.

With mileage that low the van has be standing around for most of its life I would change them ASAP certainly before any trips away.
Always recommended with Motorhomes to change the tyres after 5 years or 7 years if the van used regularly, your van has hardly been used at all so defiantly need changing.

In my experience Michelin tyres that old are awful. tap one with a hammer and you’ll see that its sort of fossilised and become rock hard. They will be offering dangerously little grip, especially in the wet, I would replace them immediately.

They are your one contact with the road and carry you life in their rubber.

When I had a blow out, the tyre looked perfect, well it didn't anymore but the other three dod, and it was inly when the AA man pointed out how old they were did I learn about tyres and age.

I was fortunate, the blow out occured on a straight piece of road with no traffic but a hedge and steep drop on the nearside. Even at just 35mph it was very exciting as I tried to keep the van on a straight line!

But it's your van, life, family, money!

I changed my Bridgestones last year, at 13 years old and 46k on then. Van stored inside most of its life no cracking on sidewall or in tread. The ride quality was greatly improved for doing it, a bit hard to scrap 6 tyres with 5-6mm of tread still left on them, but can notice the difference and can recommend you do the same.

Probably 30 years ago no one would have said anything about the tyres but times have changed.
50 /60 years ago maybe but 30 years ago it was recommended to change them at 5 years especially on caravans that tend to spend most of their life standing still.

The spare on our 55 plate Rienza was the oringional tyre as fitted by Ford I think . It was a Continental van tyre with a date stamp that matched the build date of the chassis. It still had the mould marks on it.
Even thought the milage was only 24000 when we bought it six years ago all the tyres were all showing cracking in the treads. I l know it was stood for nine months before we bought it.
For piece of mind I had all the tyres changed including the spare.

Our van is serviced by a family friend who runs a garage. When I collected it after its latest MOT he had replaced the two front tyres. He'd noticed that, although there was plenty of tread, they were 9 years old. He didn't need to ask me if I wanted it done.

I've just replaced the caravan tyres too. They had done hardly any mileage (less than 5000) but if you google "Caravan Tyre Replacement Age" you will see that there are lots of dire warnings of why you should replace them after 5 and at the latest 7 years.

Some of the reasons cited - in comparison to a car tyre (more UV exposure, static loading, flatting etc) might be applicable to Motorhomes.

This article may be of interest? https://www.hortoncommon.co.uk/motorhome-tyre-life-age/

P.S. It's just occurred to me that there will be some folk who don't accept the advice and who do have a tyre failure.
They could be the same ones driving the motorhome (or any other vehicle) which is coming towards you at 60 mph on a single carriageway road - with nowhere to go?

P.P.S. I was pleasantly surprised, when I replaced the caravan tyres here in Portugal last week, to find that it was £25 cheaper than if I'd bought the same tyre in the UK.

4 toyo tyres fitted £450. Not that expensive when you consider the cost of a blow out at 50mph. My tyres were 7 years old and a mix of Bridgestone and Goodyear. All of them was showing signs of age on the inside.
Better safe then dead.

If you don't want to become a passenger to Doom you would probably want to change them even if its just for peace of Mind........you never know you may need a fresh set if your in Italy and don't forget to get the brake fluid changed before visiting if it hasn't been done for a while..;)

Having been overtaken by most of my rear offside tyre whilst whizzing along lane 3 of the M1 in my old Picasso, I would thoroughly recommend changing them. It's not something I want to repeat and definitely not in a MoHo.

How much do you value your family? Only the cost of 5 tyres £700.

Standing at their graves you will have wished you changed them.

Sorry to be so brutal but the truth hurts

It does depend on the manufacturer what they say about tyre ages I know Conti say visual inspections at later ages of I think ten years, (do check that though as my memory is suspect). I would be changing those though I think, especially as folks are saying the Michelins don’t age well. I have Conti’s so can’t comment but no reason to think they would say it if they haven’t found it so 👍
