Hymer bed gas struts

Hymer gas struts vary in length, strength and fixing method. And fitting them is not an easy job even if you know what you are doing. Others on here have reported problems like the strut going through the windscreen!

I got my struts replaced by Reliance Services near Chichester who knew what they were doing.

Your strut will have a part number on it so check the part numbers as Peter says they vary depends on the size of the bed, the weight of the bed and the drop height.

Hi there. Thanks for your reply. Good that you got yours fitted. We have fitted gas struts/shock absorbers for suspension on our previous van so although we expect this job to be fiddly we will change them ourselves.

It is really just to confirm the part is OK as the hymer is new to us so not sure if all hymer drop down beds are the same?

At the moment there are 1300N struts but I think it's probably worth going to 1700N whilst we are changing them?

I bought some 1700 nm struts from SGS in Derby which they sold as Hymer bed struts, fitted made no difference 🤔 our S800 has 2200 rated struts now sorted and easy to lift again 👍

I wouldn't increase the pressure by more than 10% or you will never get the bed down.

OK thats good to know.

The ones on there at the moment are 1300N and presumably ancient.

We are in Spain so easier for us to order from the mainland

I would replace like for like.

Hymer have different struts for different beds for a reason.
I would suggest you replace them exactly with the original model.

Interesting. I thought that maybe by increasing up it would better hold the bed up?

I think that the 1300 and 1700 are then same length so both should fit the same but the extra should make raising the bed easier as well?

Talk to SGS engineering they will give you good advice and they are compedivly priced.

As we are in Spain it would be easier that we order from the mainland maybe Belgium or Germany. The prices are 45€ for the 1700N or 49€ for the 1300N

I replaced ours on the Burstner, same as Hymer, using SGS Engineering, much easier than I understood but it’s a 2 man job. The second side took less than 15 mins. Don’t be put off by the horror stories I can’t conceive how you could get a ram through the windscreen!! What I would say is I replaced a 1700nm like for like and it is improved the situation. If I did it again I’d increase to 1900/2000nm which would hold the bed front edge higher.

Brilliant. Good to know. It will be fiddly but it's not complicated.

It's interesting you say about holding the front of the bed higher because ours does bounce a little when driving over bumps.

As we have 1300 atm then upgrading to 1700 could help with this.

I have been trying to speak to SGS but failed to get through so far. I'll keep trying though

Morning all.

Thanks for all your input. Much appreciated.

So, I emailed with SGS and their reply was that we can indeed go up from 1300N to 1700N. Just thought I'd share that as it might be useful for someone.

Thanks
Ellie

Hey all.

Just an update. We bought the gas struts from SGS. They were really helpful

We changed from 1300N to 1700N.

The job was a little fiddly but took about an hour.

Wow! The difference is incredible.

Thanks to you all for your help

Changed my gas struts today. Bit of a palaver but the optimum approach is to lift my wife up in the bed and hold her there until the new one are in place!
