I have been using an old phone Samsung S5 to download TV and movies and then play on the TV when we're away using a lead. However the S5 is now too old and the operation system is not supported by BBC or Netflix. I got an S6 but couldn't get it the cast to the tv so I sent it back. I'm now trying to cast my A13 phone to my smart TV but although there are are lots of apps claiming to do it I can't get it to work. Any ideas please?

Sorry, I can’t answer your Q, but I see that the BBC Iplayer doesn’t support downloads to a laptop any more.

I presume you have Chromecast built into the TV or you have a Chromecast adapter plugged into an HDMI port? The TV with Chromecast built in or the adapter, as appropriate, need to be on the same WiFi network as your phone.

No Chromecast, I tried a Fire stick which has a setting for streaming but that wouldn't work, I may get a Chromecast as long as I know it will work

Most Android phones since using Android version 5 natively support Chromecast. However, I have no direct experience of Samsung mobile devices so you would need to check.

I did have a Chromecast years ago, and I found it wouldn't work on my phone's hotspot as that is not a Wi-Fi network. That was about 5 years ago, I don't know if it's changed

My samsung A40 has a Smart View button on the settings icon page, this works fine to a firestick for mirroring the screen.

That should be fine if you have programs downloaded in some sort of video format, but a lot of streaming services dont like you using an external display and stop it working if they detect one.

But that shouldn't be a problem if you have a firestick as you can stream directly from there

Screen Mirroring is not the same as Casting. You are not streaming the original content and the quality is lower and not so intuitive to control.

Started with a pico projector I could put in my pocket along with the old Apple iPod touch with the spinning wheel to play films, then an iPod touch, and now do this in my iPhone easy peasy just get an iPhone 😎 there are various ways of doing this https://uk.pcmag.com/mobile-phones/40528/how-to-connect-your-iphone-or-ipad-to-your-tv

I assume you can do similar with other phone manufacturers

I have an android smart TV with chromecast built in. I have still found it very fiddly to get chromecast to work from my phone. Slightly better with the Samsung tablet but still unreliable. I gave up in the end and just watch on the tablet.

Some tablets used to come with mini HDMI output but they seems to be rare now sadly.

Try Apple iPhone you will find it works 😎

I used a mirroring app on my Firestick but that only allowed 3 day trial

I am not at home to try it, but i think when you have a smartview connection, you can also cast from individual apps like you would with chromecast.

But as far as I am aware, when you cast to a tv it tells the cast receiving device where to get the stream from and it will make the connection directly, and this may bypass your phone entirely for streaming services, this is often when they block the stream as it isn't to your phone.

The screen resolution on my phone is pretty good, so even with mirroring you still get fairly acceptable quality.

Thanks for all the replies, I have given up trying, I will use a fire stick and my phone's hotspot. Both myself and Mrs. Odd have 20gb each so as long as we get 4g we will be ok. It's just annoying that something I have used for years has been 'upgraded' and now doesn't work
