How Much Are You Prepared to Pay for on Site Electicity

It’s worth noting cost needs to also allow for the installation and maintenance including regular tests for the system.

I would prefer a pay for what you use system with a nominal charge for the hook up connection. That would reduce some of the abuse from those I have hook up so I’ll use everything and in our “green” age reduces waste. If I’m on site only a couple of days I don’t really want ehu (when I laid out a lot for lithium battery)but as it’s in the pitch price I join the I’m going to use it ranks. A CL I was on recently hinted their £5 a night leccy allowance was not enough.

Apart from our Frankia with ALDE heating, our other 3 vans were all low consumers of electricity, being heated by gas or diesel.

So it pees me off when you go to some sites, like all the club sites and you are charged for EHU when you barely use it.

All our lights are LED, we usually sit with one on at any one time. TV is Avtex and other than fridge, very low consumption.

I think all sites should meter EHU and as they cannot charge more than they pay for it per KW in the UK. They should charge a fixed fee to cover cost of supply.

In other words.

As an example:

Site fee £20 per night
EHU per night £2 + Kw usage at cost

I think the most we paid on the continent was around €0.50 per kw

PS ...... It's as much use as a chocolate teapot if you go to Scotland :giggler: 🤪
We had a 40w free standing panel on our August 2014 trip to Scotland, worked for us at the Loch Rannoch campsite 👍.

When we are away we like everything to be comfortable, we don't go away worrying about how much it costs that would just spoil the whole experience, the cost of the pitch is what it is and we make our decision that it is worth it by using that site or not.

We are all electric, Fridge, water heater, heating if needed we use induction hobs for cooking and a remoska as our oven, lights are led apart from two corner table lamps which are low wattage.
The day we had to worry about the cost of the EHU will be the day we stop using our motorhome.

But paying less brings extra pleasure to your holidays 🤔😊

Spending less or more money has never brought me more or less pleasure.

Money is a tool. It's simply a means to an end to be used in the best manner to bring the best return in order to get you off the treadmill as soon as is practicable and has zero effect on my emotional state.

Price of fuel has risen quite dramatically over the last few months... it doesn't seem to be stopping those with camper vans., motorhomes and caravans travelling any less... doesn't stop me using the beast of a car I have under cover in the garage any less or detract from the pleasure I get from driving it.

You don't want to pay for power, fair enough, but I wouldn't think for one minute that those who do or those who pay a little more are having a lesser experience.

I retired at 47... life is for living.

The site owner has to recover the cost of installing the ehu (not cheap) as well as the cost of the power. I use a CL that has a metered supply, with the first 10 units per day free. In summer that is plenty for a bit of hot water and boiling a kettle. In winter you very quickly learn to turn the heating and hot water off when you don’t need them and to use gas when it is seriously cold.

No i wouldn't pay a fiver for lecy, i hate using mains, only use it when forced to by including it in the price.
I prefer sites that dont have lecky at all. We started camping before mains was available and light came from a gas lamp and a 12v lamp pluged into the Commando. Yes we moved on to cars with spare batteries in the boot and 20W solar panels to help cover use of a Cpap machine. Sites charging spare batteries because it pissed down for a fortnight. Times move on and my little power station on the roof is my pressent and will be the future but how quick.
We will have more threads about how to run my fridge off solar. Will we have lifetime CO2 Passports, would sir like 500l of diesel or a flight to xxxx. Prices are on way up up, changes are on the way, but, what, blackouts as we had in the 70s or the French way, charge more in winter, let the market decide, cull off the vunerable that we failed to kill off with covid.
Hopefully the sites that currently apologise for no hook up, resist and continue to exist and flourish in the future.
I prefer to spend my money my way and not feel like i'm being ripped off.
A fair price not exploitation, sorry got it wrong that's capitalism for you (or is it)
Night night

When you go to a restaurant do you demand you should only pay for the cost of the food and the wine / beer should be at market price? You are paying for the food the service the ambiance (or lack of) the location ( it costs more the closer you get to the Rialto bridge for example). So to say you ‘shouldn't’ have to pay for electric that has been provided as a service maybe a view but maybe an unrealistic expectation. It cost to have it installed it costs to maintain and electricity as we all know is not free.

Taking the restaurant analogy a step , as a tea totaler should i pay for the upkeep of the wine cellar. I see food and drink as 2 separate services as with provision of electricity. Mains electricity is not a prerequisite to camping. Depends on your business model wihich is why you can pay £5 a night (now getting rarer) or in excess of £30.

Inflation that is steaming down the tracks means everything is going to get more expensive

They'll need to start charging extra soon. I've seen electric heaters full heat on in awnings when owners were away for the day.
We pull the plug on heaters in unoccupied awnings. It is in the T’s & C’s upon booking.

Not a very eco thing to do in the first place and to make a point with the attitude of “I paid for it so I will use it” is a pretty poor argument.

As other have said - if you don’t like the prices don’t got to that particular site. Simples.

Most sites now require you to have electric hook up even if if you don't want it I thought all the big clubs wanted to be green so why insist you have electric hook up , could it be to do with extra profit ? How much electric do you use on a sunny day ?

Truck Festival want £60+£3 fee for EHU at their music festival.
Same price for 3 or 4 nights 🤔
But maybe they’ve to run out individual EHU points for campers who need electric even in summer 🤷‍♂️

The electric hookup is included as part of the package price of the pitch. You are not required to use it, the choice is yours. It is a bit like a hotel room package, it’s your choice whether you use the kettle and eat the biscuits or turn the telly or heating on. However human nature is to use “what you have paid for” and green or eco principles go out the window.

Talking about hotels, when on Business I cant get through all the shampoo and shower gel as its supplied for 2 people in a room so there is a small stash (maybe not that small) that makes its way into the MoHo....happy days it just ensures we have 5* showering ;)

Have to add I hate hotels have stayed in far too many....in the middle of the night you have to make a conscious effort to remember which is the room door and which is the bathroom otherwise you could find yourself standing naked in the corridor (I have colleagues who have done this)....stuff of nightmares for all concerned !!

We're putting our prices up next year. Funsters Electric is going up £1 a night.

Funster Prices

Pitch no electric £10 Night
With electric £14

Non Funsters

Pitch no electric £14
With Electric £18
