Hi all.

We are back from our maiden trip which went pretty well and without any major problems.

We ended up having to scale back the distances travelled because I wasn’t feeling great after my accident but, even allowing for that, I was surprised at how tiring the driving part was. We did something over 1100 miles in 13 days with the longest being about 250 miles in the day – which pretty much wiped me out (I am doing all the driving at the moment as my wife hasn’t yet passed her C1 test – obviously once we can share the driving things will become a little easier).

I’m interested to know how far others travel in a day before you start to feel like it’s too much. Obviously there are some days where you just want to do short trips to see one thing or another but, when you’re trying to cover distance to get to a destination, how much do you aim to bite off each day?

Thanks

Chris

Are you a member of the Carthago owners club? If so have a word with George he keeps tabs on dealer performance and reports back to Carthago.

We don’t do much in UK.
France our limit is about 80-150 Kms a day.
its more about seeing the countryside & relaxing than travelling.
It does depend on where you are going, how long you’ve got & what you want to do.
It does sound as tho you are trying to cover a lot of distance in a short time. France is one biiiiig country best to break it up into lots of visits!

I'll start by saying that we're limited by time: due to work we can only do 2 (or occasionally 3) weeks at a time so if we want to see somewhere a bit further away then a few long driving days are inevitable. And we always do motorways as the driving is easier and quicker.

When planning I'll generally see how long it takes to get to the furthest point of interest, add 20% to Google's driving time and then try to divide it up into 4 hour drives. It doesn't always work out evenly because we of course want to stay somewhere nice so we might end up with a mixture of 3, 4 and 5 hour drives to get there. We've done a couple of 6 hour drives when it made sense....but we try to limit those, and we'll only usually do that if we're staying somewhere for 2 or 3 nights either side of the long drive. Our methodology is to get the long drives done at the beginning of the holiday, then take it easier on the way back.

We don't drive every day - I like to have a balance between 1 and 2 night stops, and at least one 3 night stop per fortnight and if we can keep our average mileage to around 120 miles per day (averaged over all days, driving and non-driving) then the holiday is sufficiently relaxing for us.

I was still working and had limited holiday time. Our first trip in the campervan was over-ambitious, involving 2500 miles in 17 days. Several marathon driving days of 8 or 9 hours, interspersed by 3 or 4 nights on campsites. It was fantastic in terms of multiple awesome destinations but hardly relaxing.

Nowadays 4 hours driving is enough for me, using non-toll roads.

Our first ever motorhome trip abroad was 10 days to the Rhine and Mosel valleys. We saw lots of .............................................................................. motorway!

if touring tend to stop quite often during the day so probably drive a max of an hour in one go still manage to get in about 120 miles in a day.
when driving through France to get to Valencia tend to do between 5 and 6 hours but again many short stops during those distances.

In my younger and foolish days I have done Dieppe to Valencia non stop in a car toilet breaks only but to old for that now:)

As far as I need to go, to get there.

Hundreds of miles to get a ferry after travel delays, or off to a campsite 20 miles down the road for a weekend away
