How easy is it to remove a dish, please?

We have a dish on our MH, which we never use. How easy would it be for an unskilled person to remove it and repair any damage or holes left, please? And what would I do with the connecting cables, please? Or, is it a job for someone who knows what they're doing?

Just so you know, I have no experience whatsoever of dishes, MH roofs, electrics etc.

I think some satellite dish manufacturers can also provide a blanking plate to use when the dish is removed? Obviously, this would be manufacturer/dish dependent.

with some luck it might be bolted to the base, which can stay on your motorhome, but you wont know until you get up and have look? i would refrain from cutting any cables, it might be better to remove the roof gland if necessary and remove the cabling intact.

if the dish is fixed to the roof without a mounting plate then you could use a cheese wire type saw, but obviously keep it as close to the satellite mount as possible, you could even try a big bread knife and saw away at the adhesive carefully, again keeping as close as possible to the satellite mount as possible.

its not difficult, just time consuming as you want to be as careful as you can !

One or two long blots in hinge and the big dish comes off and weighs nothing, 17mm spanner on mine. I left the base and bolted a Mifi aerial to it.

Oh, I thought it would weigh enough to make it worth removing. That's disappointing, as we need to lose some weight.

The majority have a mounting plate glued to the roof. Simply unbolt and leave the plate behind. The cable will pass through the roof using a gland. You will need to cut the cable, loosen the nut to remove cable and put something in the gland to seal and tighten down. Very easy to do diy if you are ok on ladders

It's only 12v DC you would not get a shock, but the assumption is that you unplug the cables inside that go to the roof

Where in the UK are you? Just post it in classifieds, someone might be local to where you are or plan to be? If I was home I would have helped remove it (don't need one thanks!!) When are you back in Charente area? As we might be passing towards the end of next week.

I would avoid cutting the cable at all costs as new cables can be expensive so might not be worth as much with intact cables. They could be reconnected but it can be a faf!

As regards cables, a simple explanation is that you will have a control box somewhere that activates the dish up and down (poss via your remote) where the sat cables will plug into and that box will be fed from a 12v supply from somewhere. Wires will then come from the control box to your TV.

I'm currently near Lincoln but not with the MH. Not sure when I'm home again but, when I am, it won't be for long before we're off again!

Are dishes actually worth anything? I thought with so many people streaming tv now they wouldn't be in demand

I think there will always be a market for a decent dish at the right price. Since it's become expensive for data in the EU for UK travellers, spending a couple of hundred pounds on a dish might make sense for some people. Spending thousands on one though might not make sense as you can buy a lot of data at that sort of money !!

There are still some areas in the UK where data is limited and satellite might be a good option.

I don't think that sat dishes are the future or the next garlic bread phenomenon but they still have their uses !

Check out prices on eBay, some on there for @£500 but of course they're not sold, so how much they're worth is only what someone wants to pay!

Yes, of course, it is and I understand that nothing has a value unless there's a buyer for it I don't even know what make or model it is but I'll have a look when I get home and check out the prices (of sold dishes ) on eBay. Thank you so much for your advice
