How do you manage without a cooker?

I use a small slow cooker powered through an inverter but 12v slow cookers are available. Usually this is used (in the sink) when travelling.

I also have a tagine which goes on the gas (don't use that much as it can't be left and lakes several hours).

I also have a deep, heavy bottomed saute pan with a close fitting lid and use that a great deal.

If we are on hook-up I use a breadmaker for fresh bread :)

Thinking buying a panel van, found a nice one but it has no oven. How do others manage without one. Hubby and I spend most time off grid . Would like to here how others manage?

Ann

We have a small oven and grill in our Motorhome which we hardly ever use.

I have always used my Weber Jumbo Joe BBQ for all our cooking where possible.
It is so versatile you can cook anything with it. Use a cast iron pot for casseroles, Chilli, Curry etc anything that goes in a pot can be cooked on the BBQ. Roast Chicken with an extension ring attached and Weber electric rotisserie, beer can chicken, roast beef, pork etc. You can even cook cakes, bread, pizza as well as all the usual grilled sausages, burgers etc.
We also use a slow cooker, one that allows you to brown things first on the hob. Also for breakfast and many many other things a Ridgemonkey is great and very easy to use outside on a gas hob to avoid cooking smells. So being without a built in oven doesn’t mean you have to live on pot noodles.

Reading this, I just realised we actualy store a tea towel wrapped toaster in ours! We used the oven once but it was useless to be honest, I like the look of those Ramoska things...

well my oven is fine. use it a lot. bit slower than home but there is no rush when you're away. did a lovely shoulder of lamb at the weekend, delish!
:giggle:

Would you have an Omnia or double skillet or does each have a place for different things?

I went from a full oven and 3 gas rings and an electric ring to two gas rings and no oven, I now use 2 double skillets, one old skillet that is no longer non stick to boil in and a new one ,bought from a funster to fry and bake. I also have a remoska that I only use on EHU which is not much as i dont buy EHU much now as the van is all gas besides for the fridge and the kettle when I want to use it, on EHU of course so I use the gas kettle more now

I'm not a stalker but do follow this couple: they have some suggestions on cooking:

1) Cooking Pizza in a Van
2) Omnia Oven

As others have said two saucepans are more than adequate to cook with, it really isn't a problem to eat well.

The oven at my house has only been used twice in the almost 7 years. I can't imagine needing one in the PVC although a microwave could be handy.

I switched my touring diet to mostly fresh baguettes with various fillings and salad, or cheese, and even lost some weight. :)

We too had a Remoska, but since we rarely have leccy, it got more use at home than in the van. Enter the double skillet. We do have an oven in our pvc, which does a very good job of heating the van, which is not so good when it's 36 deg or so.

One thing we do miss when we are away for long periods, is ... chips. Or a roast. And the double skillet makes a fair fist of both.

A couple of chopped potatoes covered with a little oil, a chicken breast flavoured with soy sauce or mustard, or tikka mix etc, thrown in to the skillet and cooked on a medium to low heat for 30-40 mins, maybe with veges in the top skillet, makes an easy trouble free dinner, while you sit outside the van in the sun supping nice wine. Other recipes welcomed.

Ours is one of the new ones, I have never even seen the original type but I imagine that the new ones might have a better non-stick coating due to newer technology, The present quality seems good to me. And of course they can be used just as pans, they pack away very compactly, a so take up little space in the van. We are quite pleased with them.

Oh don’t say that ... I gain so much info from reading threads I didn’t start. Others will too.

as do we, however it would be at the very least courteous to thank or even acknowledge others for their contributions to a thread started by the op, that was my point.

Maybe colyboy is indisposed!
PS. I still have an stove top oven to sell!
