Holy Island causeway

Sounds worth a visit.
We tend to stay at campsites with bus stop nearby so would normally look for a site from where we can visit more than one place by bus.
Not always possible but we manage often enough.
Alnwick is one of the places the buses on the Berwick to Newcastle (possibly further south) call. There may be east-west buses as well. It's over 25 years since I did the Newcastle to Berwick on the bus regularly.

We walked across when we stayed at Barn at Beal in July.
No problems with the tides, but it would be nice if traffic kept to the speed limit and gave you a little more space on the sections where it is difficult to avoid walking on the road and there is nothing coming the other way, so they could have moved out more.
You may already know this but walkers usually follow the line of poles on the south side of the causeway. It’s the Pilgrim route.

My first visit to Lindisfarne was on 1968 and I have been back almost every year since, except when we were living in Wales. I usually go in the winter when it is quieter.

Yes we do, but didn’t look much fun. Mud and sludge!
Best done on a summer day but when overcast I think.

But as the drying relates to beer production I could tolerate it to a degree , this farm is the sole provider of barley for Timothy Taylor Landlord Ale 👍
I've just passed this tidbit to Rob as its one of his favourite beers - we'll be having another visit north next year

Great pics David. Did you go & see the white pyramid on Holy Island?

Did someone mention cheese? :tounge:

We usually get around by bus quite well, but we do research it first. Don't do it slavishly.

You would need to be bonkers, we did look at the line of poles and the broken refuge tower and the mud 😳

It is mentioned in the tide times but specifically says a guide with knowledge is essential 👍

Nope, missed that, it was a cold ride over and I also did my 2 mile walk on Holy island round the castle, knackered by then, but not heard of the pyramid 🤔👍

Had a bit of excitement just after dark and an hour before safe to cross again two vehicles with blue lights went as far as the causeway start but no further

Guessing a car tried to cross too early or much too late 🤔

I was bonkers when I did it in my 20s 😁 suffice to say I was one of 3 coppers having a weekend away to enjoy the island hostelries and meet up with some Northumbrian coppers we had met whilst on strike duty. They were a bunch of comic nutters 👍🏻

We hadn’t heard about it before either. When we first spotted it looming over the horizon as we approached we thought it was the sails of a large sailing boat

The white pyramid is a day mark built by Trinity House to aid navigation. It is one of the oldest ones in the UK dating back to about 1810.

I did research the pyramid, it’s a navigational reference similar to a lighthouse but just a white structure

We are going back over in our motorhome today for a better look round the village for Bev, I think the pyramid will be too far for me yet

Last night I was aware of a noise that I wondered if it was the air dryers , near constant sound like a continuous train that we hear occasionally , or maybe a diesel heater on a van. Still there this morning, only a low background noise but realised the offshore wind has dropped and we can now hear the waves on the beach even though it’s a mile away

It’s been a nice stop , the eating at the barn yesterday was only average , we are going to try them for breakfast to see if things are better, by 1:30 yesterday when we arrived 2 out of 4 meal options were sold out , we couldn’t all have roast dinner, I had F&C that then took all the dining options off the menu and they were still open till 3 🤔

We walked from the castle to the pyramid & it was further than we expected as the path follows the coastline. Much quicker from the car park. There were quite a few surfers up there.

It's not as big as you expect when you get close to it.
