As the saying goes, ‘you only had one job’

We are up in Northumbria , tonight is third night at the amazing parking option at Alnwick long stay car park on Howling Lane

On our drive up we agreed it might be nice to cycle on to Holy Island from the Barn at Beal site

So I check tide times and weather , confirming sunny Sunday forecast and safe to cross from midday till dusk, plenty of time to get over have a look round and get back before dark 👍

Booked the site, double checked the tide times and found I had read the unsafe times as the safe times , 🙄 they are even shown in red for obvious reasons 🤔

So looks like an early start and small risk of wet wheels on the return journey 😁

Moving to Beal in the morning , not a cheap site , but it will be five nights so far for £72 by the time we leave on Monday , that’s OK by us

Plenty cars get caught out BUT don't think I have ever seen bikelists getting stuck will watch news and watch out for you.😂😂😂

There was a car caught out recently when they thought they had plenty of time, unfortunately the tide came in earlier & faster than the timetable suggested due to storms in the North sea.

Usually the tide tables tend to be cautious but when there is bad weather and the wind in the wrong direction traveller beware.

Bamburgh Castle. The car park opposite is a great stop for £10. Ditto for Beadnell Bay car park. Both can be reserved on the Northumberland County Council website. Great shout on the Alnwick stopover, we will be giving that a go for sure as we often pop up that way for a night, or two as we are only 90 minutes away.

We walked across when we stayed at Barn at Beal in July.
No problems with the tides, but it would be nice if traffic kept to the speed limit and gave you a little more space on the sections where it is difficult to avoid walking on the road and there is nothing coming the other way, so they could have moved out more.

Looked at both of those as possibilities , both have to be booked online only and at least 24 hours before arrival 🤔 then it only covers 6-8 overnight, you can’t add longer on line but you can use the pay machines, but then only in 4 hour blocks, so unless you can do early starts you will end up paying £20 to stop in a car park with no facilities 🤔

Also Bamburgh castle appears to be closed at the moment or we would have gone there for a look round

I did exactly the same when we took the van over in September, luckily Rob didn't  , it just meant we had longer having a picnic.

Such a shame they don't let vans overnight.

We have not been before, had to pick a pitch number for booking, the site plan isn’t very clear, we have picked no 20, knowing my luck it will be the only one with no view 🙄🤣
Good choice!

Just checked the tide for that day, unsafe to cross 12-5 they called help at 3 🤔
The land around the causeway is very flat and it doesn't take too much bad weather to create a 'storm surge' if the wind is in the wrong direction. The general advice is if the water has reached the edge of the causeway then don't attempt to cross. Even in normal tide conditions the water level rises very quickly.

Sorry David, but that made me and her laugh out loud. 😆😆👍

The causeway is exactly 1 mile from the campsite, also there is a very useful cinder track running alongside the road separated by a hedge

I had underestimated the wind strength when I turn round to walk back but still made it back for the rugby 👍

Eating in the barn tomorrow after our cycle to the island and back

Many a time I have been there in a car waiting for the tide to go out.

Hopefully, not the one next to the bl#@dy drying shed that has fans roaring away till 10.00pm!!

Before booking anywhere I always check it out via Google Satelite map to look at access, parking areas, pitches etc.

Must be a seasonal thing, no noise here tonight except the wind, can’t see us cycling over tomorrow in this, weather app says it’s 14mph the sound suggests a lot more 😳

But as the drying relates to beer production I could tolerate it to a degree , this farm is the sole provider of barley for Timothy Taylor Landlord Ale 👍

That was a one way journey, coming back was hard into the ‘breeze’ but a nice ride out and I did my 2 mile walk for today on the island 👍

Off for dinner at the Barn with a couple of pints of draught Landlord I reckon, well earned

We are planning a longish trip to Northumberland and we would like to see Alnwick castle. I see it is just 8 minutes walk from Howling lane long stay car park. BUT, what is amazing about it! What other good points has Alnwick got apart from the castle?
How much does the long stay cost?
Barn on the Beal campsite, will check it's website but what can be done in the area if just walking.
Been to Holy Island a number of times by car, not really wanting to visit again just yet.

BUT, what is amazing about it

Possibly amazing is overly generous, but it’s free, very convenient for the town and overnighting is allowed which is becoming a rarity

The castle I think is closed at present BTW

Alnwick is a lovely old town.

There is a huge second hand book shop in the old railway station.

Lots of antique and art and craft type shops.

Artisan food shops.

A heritage railway line plus an annual model railway show.

That's just for starters.

Thanks David, will check for when the castle reopens.

Sounds worth a visit.
We tend to stay at campsites with bus stop nearby so would normally look for a site from where we can visit more than one place by bus.
Not always possible but we manage often enough.
