Hi all
I have always always wanted a motorhome, and, for my 50th birthday, my husband has hired one for a week's holiday for me and the kids (I'm the only driver). I'm a bit scared about driving such a big vehicle (it is 7.4m long) and so want to have a bit of training - but all the training I have found needs me to have a motorhome and bring my own along? Do you have any advice of how I could get some training before I have a motorhome? I'm in London, UK.

You might like to consider a commercial vehicle course, explain what you're trying to achieve and they may be able to take you out in a van, length isn't usually an issue but width can be, get used to looking in your mirrors to ensure you're central in your lane.
I hope you enjoy yourself, just relax and take your time.

Try these they have the vehicles and it not to far from you

Hi can I ask how you got on please as we have just bought our first MH at 7.5m and I want to drive it too but may benefit from a trainer other than my Partner as it may be less stressful on the relationship!🤣👍Thanks

Where are you there are many that will train you in your own van or supply one

We rented last year pre-purchase. I've got a vito van short wheelbase which is less than 5m long and the van we rented was 7.5m. The only thing you need to watch other than the width is the overhang over the back wheels when you turn, at that length till probably be a large overhang and it kicks out a bit.

Rent a van for a day? 🙂

Thanks, the overhang is quite large and definitely one to watch. I may 'give it a go' on the motorway on our next trip out just to get the feel of it first. I have been told I am a good/confident driver and have a full bike licence having had a couple of bikes in the past but the MH is all new to me so want to be confident I know what to do if and when a challenge arises as I am sure they do!😁

Out of interest has anyone done the CAMC training or are there better options?

Only did the very short one at on of the shows - even then got a few good hints.

Just go to a supermarket carpark or something familiar ( check for barriers) when is very quiet then practice reversing in to parking bays ,
And pay attention to the overhang swing out ,
Place a couple of cones each side at rear as you turn and watch the gap as it will get tighter as turn out against cones this help you judge in the future.
Also place a cone in front van drive and as tight as you can ,
up to where you think your nearly touching the cone ,
Then jump out and check , I bet your quite away than you thought, this will build your confidence .good luck 👍

A bike licence will be helpful especially when travelling abroad.
Expect some to stop suddenly, turn suddenly not indicate and do the complete unexpected, pulling out on you is a common thing. Even if you have priority in France expect the older lady / gentleman to pull out from the right.

Just like riding a bike then! Thanks 😁

Also beware of the height.

I know there have been lots of threads on here with vans being munched by bridges but if you are reversing and have an assistant remind the assistant to look for low hanging tree branches.
