Help with Portuguese tolls

+1 For Bip&Drive - I believe bip&go are now tied in with them. You only pay for the months you use it, eh 1.99, and works in France, Spain & Portugal. No brainer. https://www.bipdrive.com/en/

You can buy a card from the post offices and pre pay on line using a smart phone.

Coming from Spain to alburferia
If doing that you don't need to go anywhere near a toll...you will most likely crossing in to Portugal at the Ayamonte crossing.....ignore the pull off for tourists as others have mentioned and continue straight across...after about 5 km there will be a turn off for the N125...this is the Algarve coast road..you can travel on it the whole length of the Algarve and never need a toll road..it takes you easily to all the popular spots...Tavira..Albufeira, Vilamoura, Portimao, Lagos, Sagres...we have been coming for a few years now and only use this road..never use tolls..

Have used the N125 frequently, and, while the surface has improved over the years. There are a lot of islands and bad drivers to be aware of. Horses for course's as they say

Another vote for the N125 route 👍 yes it’s slower and bumpy in places and has several roundabouts but the Portuguese drivers are no worse than any other European country …. just don’t expect anyone to use their indicators and you’ll be fine 😂

Hi I am due to go to Portugal end of next week , just looked on their Web site and I am more confused now than before i started to look, thinking of easy tolls or can you just pay as you go , or is every toll automated, oh is starting get worried about them.
Just done both tolls in last few weeks. Easy Toll is what you will hit coming in from Spain on the Algarve coast. Register online with a credit card and that is active for a month. Dead easy and no stopping it works on number plate recognition.

The other is Villa Verde which is a pick up a ticket and pay when you go through a toll booth. Don’t go through the open gate channel that’s for people who have a transponder.

In the event you come in a different route eg Badajoz you might find yourself on an easy toll route so register within 24 hrs and you should be ok.

So very simple, when you cross the border go in the lane to 'Sign in' as it were and register your vehicle and credit card, then every time you pass a overhead Toll Gantry it will charge accordingly.
Or you could buy Toll Tag before you go as we have done back in 2017 and never worried since.
Go to the Emovis site on the web and buy one for France/Portugal and one for Spain it's so easy and straight forward, then no fumbling for change at Toll Booths.

We’re in Porto @ the moment. Been in Portugal a week. We came over the mountains in the north. We didn’t know whether we’d pass a machine. The day before, we paid for “EasyToll” online. Reg no. Email, CC Details. Email back confirming all. Valid for 30 days. Some Mways are EasyToll enabled, automatic no. plate recognition. Well signed in advance, a car with WiFi symbol above. Some are “take a ticket” one end, pay at the other, cash or card. Some still have a human in the box. “ViaVerde” tollbooth lanes are ONLY for Via Verde donglers .

We have meet many people that have not entered via the main routes so not used credit cards for pre pay but have then tried to pay a post office but were advised this system was only for use for portugese can be confusing as not all motorways have toll barriers best to ensure you register credit card to Reg,or as we found use BIP and go card before you travel which works on Portugese Spanish and French systems this was the best option we found as the Barrier always opens and no queueing when you use correct lane, the one problem area we have used was in Italy even with a barrier with card machine we could not get barrier to open with traffic behind next thing the machine voice said something in Italian and the barrier opened good job husband saw ticket come out he retrieved it on the back in English small writing was a fine doubles every ?Weeks if not paid,we did manage to pay online
Hope our experience stops anyone being worried about a fine during there entire trip

As per my post #20. They responded to me by return acknowledging my message registering the MH and again this morning saying if I want to pay my outstanding toll I just had to log in. I did so and paid what was due. No hassle, no penalties. I have since discovered that the Ulys French toll tag we have can be upgraded to work in Portugal and Spain so I will be doing that for future trips.

We were going from Porto to Spain didn’t know about tolls until we saw the signs on the motorway kept looking for somewhere to pay realised they were automatic number plate recognition. Looked up Portuguese tolls on internet whilst hubby drove which said we could pay at a garage. Stopped at first they didn’t do it. Eventually found garage where we could pay. Thought that was it but several weeks after getting back to UK received a fine don’t know what we did wrong 🤔

Been doing Portugal for many years and never fathomed it. But it's such a beautiful country when you avoid motorways.

We visited Portugal 2019 travelled on their motor ways the tolls were all automated no need to stop my brother lives in portugal advice given was take a note of the toll price as you pass through add them all up and pay at a local post office need your reg number while there we doubled what we had added up for return the cashier printed out a long receipt which we kept safe. at the border on return we shown this to the customs officer we had 1 euro spare no hassel and straight through. My brother has an automated device and he gets billed monthly. this worked for us . we topped up with fuel in spain much cheaper. hope this helps someone on the site might be able to help further

I have Emovis for France and I am sure they do one for Portugal too...Emovis
