Help please, scary gas problem

It can only be the regulator as from your description you are getting too higher pressure at the burners.
I would turn the regulator off and not use any gas until sorted, not worth the risk of using it.

One other possibility but I may be talking BS, if there was a slight leak on the system and when devices are turned off gas leaks out and air gets in so when you light an appliance the mixture has a too higher air content causing the yellow flame.

Either way if you want to live, turn it off at the regulator and don't use any gas until sorted.
Too much air would either not ignite or would cause a noisy white-to-blue flame. Very low pressure that's not leaving the jet fast enough to entrain the correct amount of air can cause a yellow flame. As can liquid getting as far as the burner or a partially blocked air intake at the burner. I agree with you - don't use it until the regulator has been replaced. It sounds as though the regulator is sticking and not reacting quickly enough to the initial flow of gas.

I thought mine was overfilled and persevered for long enough to run off any excess, the main regulator was full of oil !!!!

I can't remember what it was now, but I do remember you had more regulators than I had ever seen, ;) and standing well away when you was going to do your gas check.
We got there in the end. (y) Bob.

Not kowing much about regulatoer design, but if it is a regulator failure, and coming from an aviation background, I would expect it to fail/safe, ie. to fail 'closed' rather than 'open'. It is there to regulate down.

As for protection against an 80% cut-off failure, I do a calculation from the LPG contents guage as to how much I expect to fill and then watch the pump meter - if it goes over(usually under) what I expect to see, I would stop filling. After all what does it matter on refillables if one has only 70% not 80%?

Geoff
Agree, I had a regulator that failed and would not allow any gas to pass. when I removed it and shook it parts could be heard rattling around inside it.

Hi Bob
I think the fix you helped us with was a leaking regulator?? It was one of the bottles ones -----I think we got the complete regulator set later and then replaced the whole lot, it went much easier than I expected!!!!!!!--------- so many regulators!!!!!!!!?????? One bottle has a higher pressure than the other then a bulkhead regulator to totally set the pressure-----and of course we have an underslung tank as well!!!!--------- everything new and running perfect now!!!!!!

Update: its started happening again only much worse and we no longer dare use anything with gas. We are going to have to change the regulator. Is it a simple case of turn the gas off at the tank, unscrew one and replace with the other? Or is there anything else we need to know?

I hate it when hubby starts messing with gas things - makes me nervous but we have to get it sorted somehow as no way can we manage without heat on the journey back home.

Basically ,yes. Make sure that the connections are done up tight & when you open up the gas afterwards check for leaks with very soapy water using a small brush.

It is as easy as you suggest but test joints with soapy water when finished (although close to the joint your nose will tell you). Err on the side of not too tight for the connections - inexperience causes most people to over-tighten. If it leaks it can then be given a little tweak.

Update: (Also posted on my subsequent post asking for Motorhome repairers nr Benidorm)

Cannot praise gasit enough despite us not being their customer. While I was at campsite reception asking if they had anybody I could call, Richard rang gasit in England to see if they would be willing to offer any advice over the phone. They have been fantastic.

Apparently what has happened is this. It has overfilled due to a faulty gas pump or faulty cut of valve in the tank and therefore has allowed liquid down through the pipes and into the regulator. Gasit reassured us that although it seems as though the isolation tap isn’t working as there is still loads coming through, it is because of the liquid which produces far much more and it just feels like it isn’t isolated. He asked us to trust him and go try it despite plenty of gas still reaching appliances.

Sure enough, we are now able to take off the regulator and change it although he did say try and let the excess liquid out and it might be ok without changing it so we will try that first.
There was a lot of liquid!!!

All seems to be working perfectly again (fingers crossed)
I’m feeling much happier now! I hate gas!

I tried to help someone with a similar problem in the summer but they wouldn’t let me dump gas despite their PRV operating .
Perfectly safe to let it escape as you have found out if you are somewhere suitable away from ignition sources .

Just as I thought, ;) :restmycase:

It is an underslung gas tank, so slightly different to bottles and a blocked regulator is the oil substance that blocks it, if the tanks over full I would think its possibly causing the problem, if you use enough gas and it cures it you will know, but I would undo the pipe near the regulator and see if liquid comes out. :D Bob.

Ps I assisted @Sundowners Nigel on his repair. (y)

Glad your sorted, ;) :restmycase: Do I get a prize.

You were spot on! Thank you.

We were following your advice to see if there was water in it when we found we couldn’t shut off the tank in order to do so (or so we thought), Hence the call to gasit.

I always know someone on here will have the answers :)

Gasit were very helpful with advice to me too in the past
