Help Please. Sat Nav just died on way to ferry!

dead ease to change battery check out u tube
I tried it on my TT 720, using a YouTube video. Although I am quite good at repairing things, that was a disaster, and I ended up buying another TT 720. :(

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Tried out the Sygic on their free 14 day trial as recommended here. I think it’s better than copilot, and much easier to use. Will be buying full version when back home.

Just a thought and I know it’s basic, my TomTom stopped working on battery but was ok when on external power is the external power light showing as I also had a problem with the 12v external adapter, I renewed the cigarette adapter and it is still working.

...if you have an Android phone download the free Tomtom speed camera app, it needs internet access but warns of average speed camera zones and possible mobile speed cameras :xThumb:

Don't use speed camera detectors in France though as they're highly illegal! Even having the software on your phone could prompt an interesting discussion with the Gendarmerie.

Apparently the Tomtom app is legal as it doesn't pinpoint the actual precise location of the camera but lets you know that you are entering a speed camera zone and indicates when you are entering and leaving the zone. Copilot doesn't have the French speed cameras installed as standard (or Switzerland) though it is prudent to have speed cameras deactivated on the Copilot app when in France just in case! :xThumb:

IIf you have an I-phone down load the WAZE app as a back up, it's also great for diverting around traffic congestion!
I've been using a MH version of Snooper, never had a problem with it!

An update for those who have offered help. Firstly, yes Bill I use maps all the time, even at home, love them but... when touring countries as vast as France and Spain it would be cost and space prohibitive to have a detailed map for every region we travel in. I mainly use Sat Nav for lane guidance and in more built up areas and looking for small roads to sites etc.
I did pay for the caravan version of CoPilot and used that alongside Google Maps as a comparison. I have to admit I found Google better. Both however wanted to take us through the central roads of Madrid and I found it very difficult to set my preferred route the newer M50 on either. I used the map with google on mute to go on my chosen route. That day Madrid was gridlocked as everyone escaped for Christmas. CoPilot said 55 mins to an hour delay and no alternative route!! We went R2 M50. Ok a peage and a few miles longer but sailed through with no holdup!! It even tried to divert me into a massive tailback of traffic and is meant to have live traffic on it!
So.... will use mainly maps back home as know the route. Will give CoPilot and Google another try and will have one last attempt to fix ‘Doris’ the Tomtom.
Thanks for everyone’s help and suggestions. I did read and reread before making any decisions. The conclusion is there isn’t a perfect system.
All the best for your travels in 2019 and beyond, I’ve now got to look at possibly getting an IDP for our return. Happy Days

If looking to replace Doris when you get back home, please don't dismiss either the 7" Nozatec or the (better screened) Xgody 886 Sat Navs with Truck Maps, which you can update free of charge.

I've been using one all over Western Europe for several years now without a problem, and I update it about once a year. (y)

Purely as an example.

If you need more info, PM me please.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Plan on map, choose destination on sat-nav, check it goes the way THAT MY MAP SHOWS IS BEST, accept or alter route on sat-nav and go.
Both have their uses, maps don't guide you around some of the complex junctions.

Sygic has some nice points but these are outweighed by the very poor POI management. Firstly you have to convert to RUPI and also break Europe wide collections into country specific. Also Sygic does not have the sophisticated profiling that you get in Copilot. By the way I have 2 full Sygic Truck licences and 2 full CoPilot Truck licences, all live on Android tablets, so my critique is not because I have made a unilateral product choice. If you do not use personal POI collections, like Camper Contact, Archie's LPG etc etc then you will not find it too limiting.
