Help! No heating and it's freezing outside!

Late to the party due to chatting on the phone to long to @ianthebuilder. I've got a propex heater and if I run out of gas it will do the same thing, as in it needs resetting many times before it will fire up.

... so what was @ianthebuilder offering to buy off you for £1 a week then? :D

I could tell you Minxy, but I'd have to...:D
Well you could try ... but you might end up a bit scrambled! :D2

I'm wondering if due to the error code being 'in the system', it has not only prevented the gas from working but also the electric ... it would be good to know if now that the heating has been working on gas for a while if it will instead work on electric.

The electrics still gave the same error code innthe morning after the heating had been on gas overnight (just keeping the chill off). The dealer said if it continues to be a problem let them know but the MH is back in storage for a few weeks now so I'll see what it reports before our next trip - keeping a few days in hand just in case, of course!

First thing ... have you asked if you can borrow a heater from anyone on site? Nothing worse than trying to sort out a problem when you're cold.

This previous thread may help ...
We always carry a fan heater just in case we have problems,,as you say he may be able to borrow one..BUSBY,,

We carry one too just to be safe ... can't be doing with being cold ... I also carry hot water bottles as well as hot dogs! :D

Ditto, we have one of these little low wattage ceramic heaters and it chucks out some heat for a littleun.

When @two asked where did you last fill I think he was referring to which country, if it was the UK no problem. Some countries i.e. France, Spain use a mixture of Butane & Propane and the amout of Butane varies with time of year.

That could be relevant as our previous fill-up was in Spain in September and the cylinder was not completely empty, so it contains perhaps 70:30 UK/Spanish mix.

I'd go for the hot water bottle(s) first. You don't always have EHU and 1kW is a pretty measly amount of heat anyway. A hot water bottle does not need EHU. It's coldest at night and difficult to sleep if cold. Get active during the day (find a library, if necessary).

Thing you should put one of these on the shopping list:)

Could also double up when emptying the black waste:)

Is it good quality? I'd like something better quality for the bike shed.

It's certainly good quality and I would not entertain any electricals that were not on our motorhome, but wonder if it has enough Oumph to keep a draughty uninsulated shed warm and toasty.
If your looking to use one to keep damp at bay then I would be concerned if they are rated for very long continuous running.

Thanks, I insulated the shed with 25mm polystyrene sheet and sealed all the gaps, plus it's only tiny. The 1kw fan heater in there runs for about 1 minute every half hour with the controller set on 10°c. Probably runs a bit more now it's frosty.

The Spanish fill could be up to 65% Butane, I belive Butane settles to the bottom so the Propane is burnt off first.
Although Butane stops gassing off at 0° it's pretty useless much below 10° even at much higher temperatures Combi's won't run as Butane can not deliver the required flow rate.

Not so, actually that would be pretty useless so why bother mixing the stuff.
It's known as a zeotropic blend. The evaporating temperature of the mix of liquid is set by it's percentage mix. Here's a chart...

The refrigerants I use are very similar, in fact they're all hydrocarbons (y)

Somehow I thought your bike shed would be along those lines.

I did say " I believe" as I wasn't quite sure.

Would be interesting if I could get my head around those figures, they appear to refer to vaporising pressures. Obviously a mix is not so important when propelling an engine as it's a liquid take off and the vehicle is constantly moving effectively stirring the liquid.

What actually happens to a mix of gasses when sitting in a static cylinder?

They have a 'helium' of a good time!

For safety I'd go with a tube heater, as used in green houses - with fan/ceramic heaters you have an exposed heating element which I wouldn't like to leave on a 'sealed' shed with a motorbike ... petrol fumes and an exposed heat source are NOT a good mix IMV.

Yes good point about the fumes. Although I don't think petrol evaporates much at atmospheric pressure :p it is actually worse than butane :ROFLMAO:

Just bought this 1 or 2kw one so I'll have to consider a sprinkler system next

It's very good quality.
