Autohaus Camelot
Exp
campervan owner since 2016
I've owned an Autohaus Camelot conversion since 2016 (based on a VW T5 Transporter, hence a campervan rather than a motorhome). I'm now planing to replace it using a newer SWB VW Transporter with a self constructed interior (rear kitchen layout underneath a hi-top roof). I'm fairly practical, but I anticipate that acquiring the necessary knowledge and implementing this undertaking will be challenging (and time consuming!).

w2f Good luck with the conversion not done a VW first was a Transit second a Sprinter

Does your van have a name, or are you now afraid to say as you could be reported to the police under our new legislation? 😉

Rear kitchen swb VW here, Leisuredrive Vivante.

Will you be replicating the Camelot, or do you have other ideas?

Might be worth signing up for the T6forum as well (y)

Haha, hello neighbour. Our current T5 campervan is named ‘Nifty’ in memory of a 1973 Type 2 Kombi Devon Conversion which we used to explore New- Zealand back in 1990. At that time the name was a sarcastic poke at his lethargic acceleration - but despite the quirky steering and tricky gearchange he provided us with many fond memories - John

Hi Cab96 - many thanks for your welcome. I have in fact already sign up to the T6 forum in order to try and get my head around some of the electrics.

I do have a preference for a walk thru’ layout which the Camelot shares with your Vivante. When camping we find it convenient to have the bedding/dining zone separated from the galley, and it enables me to quickly and securely store my cycle during daily non-camping usage.

In fact, since I wanted my next camper to have a hi-top rather than a pop-top I did actually inspect a Vivante hi-top, but quickly realised that in order to allow adults to sleep up there, as we currently do, the roof needs to be higher. Also, a faired hi-top on a SWB does not permit accessing a full length bed. My solution (in preference to upsizing my daily transport) is to purchase a higher bullnose style hi-top from ShapesGRP. Since this combination is not available off the shelf from a convertor I’ve somewhat apprehensively decided on a home build!

hopefully I should be OK so long as I duly recognise it as being what it claims to be 🤣
