Heavy Data Users Visiting Portugal.

I am ashamed to admit that getting envelopes and buying stamps and posting stuff to Blighty is way beyond my ability (and efficency levels).

What I can manage though, is to pop in to the NOS shop and buy a few SIMs and hand them over in person when you reach Portugal.

Indeed, on reflection, and given that the offer runs out at the end of February but the SIMs stay active until 2017, I might just buy a load anyway.

Where in Portugal are you planning to visit?

Hi JJ
We're starting in Orbitur Evora, where we plan to buy the Sim Cards, before heading on to
Porto Covo
Aljezur
Sagres
Alvor
Silves
Vila Real de Santo Antonio
Then back via Spain etc

We'd really need at least one of the Sims at the beginning of out trip, and one more at half way. Our total trip in Portugal is roughly 20 days.
The other two sims would be for our return trip in the Autumn

If all else fails, we'll just pick the best alternative offer from NOS or Vodafone, and pick up simcards when we arrive.

Appreciate your kind offer though!

Regards
Robert

[QUOTE="JJ, post: 1695871, member: 24purchased 3 cards no problems have the latest info re these SIMs.

They are €10 for 10 (consecutive) days.

You are allowed 15 gigs.

You cannot top them up at the same rate.

You can buy as many sims @ €10 as you want... no passport or ID needed.

No activation needed. Just plug 'em in and off you go.

My last one lasted for 20gb so who said it will only give you 15gb?

I bring BAD, BAD NEWS...

I called into the NOS shop...

The €10 for 10 days SIM card deal ends at the end of this month.

We knew that, right?

The plan was to buy lots of these cards at €10 a go because they remained active until 2017 right?

Not the ones they sell now...

The ones they sell NOW are activated the moment you buy them and last 10 days from then... so if I had bought 20 of them (the plan) they would all have expired in 10 days time.

Yah Boo Hoo...

I assume the cards bought by Funsters before work under the old rules.

I should have known better than to have thought I could ever get one over on a mobile phone company!

I believe the cards are actually unlimited use but for some reason I don't understand they tell us it is 15gb.

One young lad in the shop said my contract was for "unlimited use" but after 15 gigs it stops... I explained to him that I had used more than 250 gig every month for the last year and a half and he muttered something about it being "policy" to say it was only 15 gigs...

Yep... I was confused too! I just pay €30 every month and have my internet on in the van 24 hours a day, every day!

Not sure Mr Robert Clark, but I will keep my ears open when the "Chattering Classes" are around and try to find out...

(I am told that the Nos "10 days for €10" deal never even appeared on their website.)

I hope that's not the case as I bought three on Wednesday and she definitely said they start from when you put them in the sim as she was urging me to buy more! Btw has anybody else had a bit of a faff trying to get them to work or is it just me being a dick?

We've just bought 3 sims from the NOS shop in Quarteira and they definitely only start the 10 days from when you activate them. We've activated the first one - didn't have any problems as it forces you to the Kanguru website and asks you to confirm activation.

After hours of relentless research (sitting outside in the sunshine, yakking away to motorhomers) I can now inform Heavy Data Users visiting Portugal that the best Mifi SIM data deal is from MEO with their "Enjoy" package.

€15 gets you a SIM which gives you 15 days at a gig per day.

You can "top it up" by handing over another €15 at a Meo shop or pay centre.

Do not try to save money and only top it with €10 because this will only give you 3 gigs of usage.

So did I and here is the proof. Thank you.

And you were right about the beach, awesome. And the town, serious quality but with the top end some Benidorm tackiness to make us feel at home.

I think the place I went into yesterday had sold out of "old", easy to use, SIM cards and had the new (not so good) ones there...

Or she was just telling me Porkies...

Or she hates me...

I am sure Funsters won't have any trouble with their already bought NOS €10 cards.

Just been to NOS in Lagos and got another 2 cards after talking to the man there.
He assures me the offer of 10 days at €10 is still available and will probably be around until summer when all the tourists arrive. He said NOS gives them 15 days notice when the end is nigh, and it hasn't happened yet.
I asked about activating the card and from when it runs, he told me same as always it will activate when you tell it to, not when you buy it.
I am now using said SIM and everything is the same as last time I got one.
It just sounds like someone is being a little cautious with the truth.

PS The last one ran for 11 days almost to the minute.

Just topped up my Vodafone pay as go sim, €15 for 15G lasts 15 days.
Other options where €12 for 12G last 7 days, €30 for 30G lasts 30days

Seems pretty good to me.

Shawn.

Depends how much data you use, I did 18gb in 10 days,
so horses for courses as the saying goes. :)

Mrs C doesn't even use that much data - and she's online shopping 24/7

Been helping the owners put up a WiFi network so that may account for the high usage.
Not bad for €10 though.

Can't find NOS shop in Vila Real, somebody can help with address?

Follow the N125 into V.R. past the Lidl roundabout and the shop is on the left just before the Municipal Market and the next roundabout.

Probably easiest to park on the Lidl car park which has specific M/H parking and walk the 150m or so.

Thank you Matamoros went yesterday to Aldi, but didn't look for it as only read about last night.
Bought on the way Meo sim €15 for 15 Days.
Managed to connect (while parking at VR camp stop, poor wifi) via my IBoost to Fon by NOS.

Bought a NOS Data SIM in Faro on Tuesday and activated it on Wednesday. 10 days for €10 offer therefore is still running in May. The Faro NOS shop is in the Algarve Forum opposite the Jumbo supermarket.
Does anyone know the best deal for data sim in Spain?

Update - just bought a NOS data sim from the Worton phone shop in Tavira Plaza - €10 for 10 days unlimited, activated when you start using it.

Yep... it seems the Nos €10 SIM is still operational despite what some NOS staff have said in a couple of their shops.

I am carrying a couple of them just in case I can help someone in need...

Hows the coverage on the NOS?

We went for MEO because its supposed to be best coverage, used it along the Algarve only so far but getting very impressive 4g in lots of places. only 3g at moment on acsi above lagos but still good.

Cost 10 euros for card plus 15 for 15gb at 15 days so not cheap but neccesary

I've got one from my last visit, ready for my next visit !

We are currently travelling through rural Portugal heading towards Bega and have mostly 3g coverage, occasionally dropping to 2g.
