Heating left on or off?

Just to add to my earlier post we always used to drain down everything except the radiators as we put anti-freeze in them. Never had any problems winter time even when away for six months.

We do wonder, with all these electrical gadgets that people have, are they not concerned if there was a power outage? We wouldn’t have trusted our central heating 100%, have on occasions had to press reset button.

Not that unusual, if the cylinder is old ish, I always left the hot water on until we moved and I put a stainless steel unvented cylinder in.
If away for 2 to 3 weeks I leave everything on, if away for a long best to drain everything, use antifreeze in the heating, but still leave the heating on 12 degrees

It was 4 years old, a twin coil stainless steel insulated tank :( and out of guarantee. Just under £1500 to replace plus plumber's charges. Just unlucky - the leak was from around the thermostat pocket and has had a temporary repair, new tank on order and due in a couple of weeks.

We turn the water off, turn the power off to the water heater, and reduce the water pressure in the central heating system.
We have a positive ventilation system that introduces filtered air into the house and heats the air input when the temperature drops.
The central heating burner and all water pipes are in the basement. Pipes are insulated and the basement temperature, though not heated, rarely drops to anywhere near freezing.

That is bad luck, it must have been faulty and may have leaked anyway. You should be able to claim for any damage on you house insurance.

I would not worry, (providing you have insurance). You have taken every step to ensure as far as possible you did all to comply. THAT it what insurance is for!.

We have the Hive control system and it and the boiler automatically come back on at the same setting after the power comes back on. We can access it remotely over the internet and it shows what is happening with the heating. We can also change the settings remotely. We check every so often and if we were to see that the temperature is dropping we can ask our son, who only lives 3 miles away, to pop over and check.
