Have I lost the plot regarding EU pet passports ?

So what is the point when you are only allowed 90 days generally then getting the EU Pet Passport ? Maybe there are other circumstances I have missed.
FYI I was quoted 140 pound for the AHC..

You'll be paying 140 for an ahc every time you go away whereas an Eu passport gets you out for the cost of it

but I would need a rabies vac there then and every year there in Spain.

Not If you can get a 3 year one & then you can also get the vaccination in any Eu country.

1 year or 3 depends on regions in spain.Here in Murcia it is legally required at one year for dogs, cats & ferrets

Most Vets above Benidorm will do 3yr rabies jabs, as far enough away from Morocco Apparently..

Thanks for the info Kozikot. My quotes were from vets in the Manilva area, close to Gibraltar. This might help explain the annual vaccination requirement.

My rather clumsy point is that my vet is around the corner from my home in the UK and I spend most of my time at that address and spend most of my pet care budget there. Until last year my vet's authority to sign the passport declarations was recognised across every country in the EU. Since BR..IT their EU recognised standards and expertise have effectively been downgraded because of the of the UK's new status. So if I do opt for a passport from an EU country on the cheap I fear that when at home, If I need urgent care for either of them, I will get the "I told you so about non-UK vet commercial priorities...." It could be that I am just being a bit paranoid about this?? I just know that I am being charged an arm and a leg for pet travel since BR..IT.
I would be very interested to hear about other members experiences with their vets on this subject.

This accords with my understanding. If you get a one year valid rabies vaccination in a relevant region in Spain and then try to get the next one/three year vaccination in the UK, your UK vet will not authorised to record it in your EU pet passport if it has been issued outside the UK or is a UK/EU legacy passport. You will need to go back to Spain or another EU country to get it done.

Fortunately we do not own a Dog, but reading the posts

1) The UK is not an EU country so why would a UK vet be able to make an entry in an EU document

2) Many owners here have found a way of obtaining an EU pet passport at reasonable costs so its a positive outcome for anyone who wishes to take their Pet to the EU

Thats correct but as long as you plan to travel in the EU with your dog you just make sure you get its rabies shots done there. You can get them redone a few months early if the expiry date doesnt line up with when you are there. I now have 2 that expire august 23 and 1 that expires December 24 as rabies is the only one the border control is interested in ill just have these redone when im in eu . I plan to be somewhere in the EU every year anyway

There have been many threads on Fun about obtaining an EU pet passport and many of us have done so. 3-year rabies vaccines are widely available in the EU, you just have to check with the vet first that they use them. France is getting a bit trickier with its ’requirements’ for issuing a pet passport but even there it’s still possible to get one with a bit of research.

My vet can't issue the ahc and other local vets are very busy. We got a Portuguese passport last year for 30 euros and the vet transferred the rabies details from the old passport as there were 2 years left. We will have to get the rabies done in the eu in future but that's no issue to do once every 3 years. Even if a trip to France was required just to get the jab it would still work out cheaper than getting an ahc every time we go abroad.

If you want the three year 'Booster' shot ask the Vet beforehand, don't assume it's automatically given.

The duration depends on the licensing for each drug in each individual country. For example Nobivac is licensed for 3 years in UK, Belgium and Germany but only 1 year in France (these are the only countries I checked so not sure of Spain or Portugal).

We were lucky enough to get an EU passport for Izzy last February, which was done in Southern Spain and valid for one year. As we are on our way back to Spain now, I have just made an appointment at a French vets for a 3 year booster jab today. I have done this as I know once I get down South it is more difficult to get the 3 year booster.

My vet in the UK was over the moon that we had got an EU passport. She thinks the whole thing I a farce.

I didn't assume, found if you ask for a 3yr Jab, vets will order them in, and book an appointment for when they're in,useful if staying in an Area for a few weeks...

Asking on other Groups, most point to Benicassim/Benicarlo Area Vets having 3yr Jabs in Stock,so a Day visit would suffice, but a Tel Call would confirm...

No UK vet is permitted to put ANYTHING in an EU passport, if they do it will be deemed void so you'd have to get another AHC to travel to the EU and get another passport ... never ever let a UK vet even touch an EU passport!!!

They're referring to the passport, the existing vac info was just transferred into the PP, no additional jab was required.

This is the Vet, but didn't need Rabies Jab as transfered the 22 months left on the UK one,as Minxy said, I asked about Rabies Jab, €28 each, could Order 3yr ones in, but checked and had a few 3yr one's in the fridge...
