I only want it as a "dash cam" I gave it a short run out today on the helmet and I'm happy with it for the price

I think so, it has dash cam mode, but I don't do long rides these days so as I have to charge the camera anyway I can format the sd card once a week or so if I have to.

I have exactly the same camera and intend to use it as a dash cam as well as action cam. Reliable and strong and links to ipad/phone easily using the recommended app. Used it on a snorkelling trip and was impressed with ease of use under water and the fact that for that price it is actually fully waterproof, less impressed with image quality, not clarity but relative lack of colour, haven't really tried to adjust it to see if can be improved, however, would have been disappointed if it had cost £450 but not in the least at £50 quidish. Clamps did not come lose on the trial run on my bike, however, picture does jog around a lot and not very entertaining to watch, would expect it to be far more smooth attached to van window. Battery life OK and should come with a spare

Yes you can set it in that mode for use as a dash cam
