Hartel door wont open

take the handle back off and turn the key then reinstall making sure the locking rod is clipped in place
We’ve tried that. The lock turns without resistance with the key in it. 😕

But did you rotate the key 180 degrees before refitting?

Hi, I appreciate your help and advice. I believe we tried several different positions of the key. Just so I’m clear on what you’re advising: you put the key in the lock and turn it through 180° before you put the lock assembly back and reconnect the metal connecting rod? Or put the lock assembly back in position, then insert and turn the key and then connect up the metal rod?
Sorry, don’t mean to be thick. We think we’ve tried what you suggest but maybe we have misunderstood you. Thanks for your forbearance!

If the key is not operating the lock. Take the handle off. Rotate the lock 180 with the key and reassemble. It caught me out once

60 quid …………..🤔

If I was you I’d bite the bullet and spent £60 on a new one off eBay…….
The one we bought appears more robust too than the previous
I looked on ebay and found one that had the same serial number and we decided to buy one with a new lock already fitted in case our issue was also a broken lock. It arrived on Saturday but I notice that the plastic bar to the left of the red arrow in my photo at post #27 is on the other side! Am going to the van tomorrow to see of it fits but am a bit annoyed as the description says that the new handle is non-sided! I expect it will need to go back.

I've been thinking about it and could it be that the lock tongue is not now touching the plastic U shaped lever. Would making the lock lever wider so that it will touch and operate the plastic U? I hope that makes sense. I can make the lever wider with a piece of metal plate or maybe make a wider lever

Thanks for the suggestions. I’m going to the van tomorrow and will try again with your repaired lock as well as the possibly wrong new one. I want to try some of the suggestions offered by TheBig1 with the original lock as it did open and shut, it just wouldn’t lock.
I’ll report back when I know more. Thanks for all the input.

Although not my thread, I’ve received helpful advice from several funsters. So by way of an update, went to the van today and tried to get the repaired lock assembly to work but with no success. Tried turning the lock as suggested by TheBig1 but the catch wasn’t engaged properly and therefore the lock wouldn’t engage.
After an hour in the cold, damp storage unit we called it a day and secured the van as best we could. Will now await for a new handle with the plastic bar lug on the correct side.
But thanks to everyone who posted. 👍

That would be great. If it doesn’t work either, I’ll return it to you.
