Hi, what sort of price should I expect to pay for an annual habitation check please (NO damp test required)? I’m struggling to get a price due to lockdown but I’m keen to get this sorted as soon as places open up. Carado T132. Thanks

Have you checked your vehicle insurance?, I am via Caravan and Motorhome Club and it specifies must have annual habitation certification can you imagine a fire caused without a gas safety certificate or a water system leak without a check certificate? Insurance companies are always looking for a get out route, not critical of anyone saving money but just another thing to consider. Stay safe everyone we will get out there again one day
No its down to you, Brit van stitch you up and won't do warranty work unless hab services have been done. German vans don't require a hab check for warranty.

Don't confuse hab checks with damp checks, damp check is needed for the water ingress warranty for the duration of the warranty on all vans.
Thanks Lenny. I thought the Hab and Damp where one of the same.

bellabee,
A quick update. I took your advice and contacted Hymer in Germany and my dealership in UK, for the missing warranty documentation you mentioned.
Hymer have replied straight away, and forwarded me the full warranty sheet made out specifically for my MH.
Excellent quick response from Hymer,
Unlike the response from the dealership at present..........having said that, it has been soon after my enquiry, and in lockdown, so maybe that’s a little unfair. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for the time being..

In the interests of complete transparency and fairness, I’ve just had an acknowledgment from the UK dealership, and they are looking into it.
So good responses all around.

I was in agreement with you.
But we renewed the warranty at the end of next year so needed full servicing history.
I got it fully serviced in January and the moho needs 2000+ quid to repair the damp in the floor.. The warranty people are paying.
Gawd £2000,thank God it was under warranty

Hi Ade S

I was interested in your comment as I am insured through C&MC. I have looked through my policy documents and the only bit I can find is:

5 Taking care of your Motorhome You must: • make sure your motorhome is roadworthy; • take all reasonable steps to protect your motorhome and its contents from loss or damage; and • allow us to examine your motorhome at any reasonable time if we ask you.

If you have different wording I would like to know where to find it.

Just got a bit of a shock.
I've just booked my new MH in for this next August for its first hab check, purchased last August during the pandemic so only has a few hundred miles on clock, mostly gained from collecting it.
Well, the cost for the Hymer Hab service, and in the words of the service dept, " your vehicle is a Hymer' it will require a Hymer warranty sticker and underbody treatment so the complete cost is £429.00".
They state they also require it for 3 days to 'sanitise' it.
Thats not to mention the van service I still have to arrange.........
Phew !!!
Bought my Hymer BMCi690 from Germany last December (2nd hand 1st reg May 2020) So due a Damp Check by next month, finding it very difficult to get booked in, first question normally "Did you buy it from us" Travelworld guy insisting it required a Hab check, as well as Damp Check, obviously at great expense, when I disagreed he said he would ring back, but didn't bother. So I have booked with Campirama on the 15th June, as we have tunnel booked on the 14th.
Regarding MB service, your display will tell you when your service is due, and if it is an auto 1st service will need the filter and fluid changed in the transmission. Mine only has 6000 odd on it and when I started it for the first time this year recently, told me I was 31 days overdue for an A service,
so not even one year from 1st registration, but I'm guessing the ECU is working from the date engine was started the first time on manufacture.

I use a mobile one that does it on my drive for £119, check around.
I part exchanged my motorhome I had for 11 years, had habitation check checks on regular basis, when I showed the dealer, never looked, wasn’t bothered. The new motorhome I exchange for bragged that it was water tight and had 95% made of composite material, etc. First habitation came up, had a list of things I expected to be covered, I name one, the back valance where joined had deep mildew in bedded, when questioned, it was remarked as it was of Spanish manufactured, they do not cover for the British weather! Throw some bleach over it was the recommendation! So bugger the habitation from dealer, like you it will be done in the drive.

I’m with CAMC and have just read my policy conditions and no mention of hab inspection.
Insurance co is AXA.

I don’t rate hab checks as being much more than a gas safety check, and keeping the warranty “live”. They always seem expensive for what is involved. However, it surely makes some sense to have a checklist of other stuff to have a look at every now and then. Now that our van is coming to the end of the warranty period, I’m thinking I’ll do the hab check myself.
I can use the checklist which is the output of the last few hab checks I’ve paid for. But I’m interested to know if “the NCC list” is something better or different. Is the NCC list available somewhere?
And can I do the gas safety check myself? What gear would I need?
The gear you need is not the thing, it’s the knowledge and competence required to use the { gear }
is more important.
