We want a guidebook, in English, for the German countryside and small towns/villages, so not those that do cities, cathedrals, art galleries etc.

Suggestions please. TIA

Although they include the usual touristy stuff we've found Rough Guides often cover smaller places, though not to any great detail. WH Smith usually have them if you've got a shop nearby to have a look.

Cicerone do a number of cycle route books which do cover the interesting spots between towns near to or on the river.
Danube and Elba are certainly part of their series I am aware of
