Got a Sprinter base vehicle (or BMW) ? Some interesting water wading experiments

A lot of cars, especially German cars, seem to have very low intakes. Air is cooler low down, so they get a mild performance benefit... provided they aren't fording a stream.

Quite a lot of this is down to technique though, it's it? My understanding is that you want to go in at a fast walking pace so the wave stays infront of the car. And do not panic and floor it as you'll overtake the wave and flood the water in through your grills and drown anything

For most Ducatos, I think the air intake is pretty high up, just below the bonnet line? For my a-class, I need to take another look. There's certainly some pipework that intakes near the bottom of the engine, but I'm not sure if that's engine or cab air...
Well this guy got through in his Pug :xwink:

This is why off road vehicles have an extension on their engine air intake. I think many drivers need to go back to basics with how an engine works. Twats! :xwink:
Would be interesting to see how an EV performs in water, could have shocking results.:xeek:
Here you go!

& the oil slick, he put a con rod through the engine wall.....
They really should make it an environmental criminal offence of failing to report the damage the same as it is in Germany.

All that just reinforces my statement that at least 25 million in the uk should be culled.

Why would it be an insurance claim? They used to tell you the second word was off if you were stupid enough to drown the engine.

He probably coated the ducks with oil! I would like to know how he explained that for an insurance claim, I was driving along then was hit by a unexpected tsunami.

They’re OK on soft ground but terrible on tarmac, the transmission winds itself up on the road so it either stops and you can’t go anywhere, Jack the rear axle up and stand WELL back, or it snaps the drive shafts. Also at about 3-5mpg it would have to be a funster with deep pockets!

Forty or so years ago I was taxi driving in my MK3 Cortina and came up to a flooded section of the A38 near Derby. I watched as a number of HGVs ploughed though. I tucked in behind one as it pushed the water away, staying close to the back of the truck and made it through with water coming in the doors. A couple of days later I was off the road cleaning the carpets that stank of stagnant water!:doh::doh:

Thanks for the info :xsmile: on second thoughts, Certainly would not be able to get into Bath LEZ with one of those.....

Are there no warning signs when the levels are high? Are these people not locals? Are they mad!

We lived the other side of mostly a small ford for 12 years, sold in 2006 and the people we sold to are still living there, but even though we had various 4x4 vehicles you had to know your limits, to deep it was off road mud plugging. 😁
The highest the river came was just over the middle rail on the foot bridge. 😯 making the river depth about 8 feet, and about 1 inch from coming in our front door. 😁 Bob.

There used to be a fair few on sale somewhere along the A1 I think, in the 80's, would have made a great moho :coffee::xThumb:
I think Tam is planning one!!

Just wondering
If you reverse through the ford is there less chance of drowning the engine?

Maybe more chance of forcing water into the exhaust pipe. I know many vans are side exit .

Yes, but you will have to make sure you keep a good pressure up on the exhaust to keep water out of it, best suck it up & do the 4 mile detour :xrofl:

Here's a pic of our old Mog at an off road event, NYD 2017, the steam coming out of the exhaust was caused by water getting into the silencer through all the rust holes !

Idots a few wrecked engines there, surely everyone knows on most cars/vans the air intakes are behind the front bumpers these days. Most 60's/70's car would have made it through.
Except my dads Austin Princess 2200HLS, we used it as a barometer (To be fair thats all it was good for !) If there was just damp in the air never mind rain it wouldn't start. In the first 2 years of its life it spent more time in Rushworths garage in Burnley than it did outside our door. O the good old days when public transport was more reliable than the car ;)

At least with the shape of it it could get mistaken for a DUKW under water? 😀

One of the worst cars for water hydraulic lock was the Renault Espace diesel,
The air intake was under the front bumper and even 2 inches of water taken too quickly
Would finish the engine,

My brother in law drove at nissan Almera through a puddle resulting in a bust engine, insurance paid out and he brought a 60" TV!

No end of amusement for us - no car but got a 60" TV!!!

Cheers James
