Getting my MH this week, was wondering...

If I have a Genny running instead of EHU and plug in a Laptop to charge will it damage the charger or laptop? and the same question for Wifey's hair straighteners :)

Jim,
Would the 4kw generator on RVs have inverter technology or does the same apply with regard to damage to laptops ?

Good question Garry

The one I had in my RV did not have inverter technology, it was a Kolar circa 1997.

It had automatic electronic voltage regulation or AVR .. and is designed to run at 3,000 rpm / 50hz irrespective of load ... but it is still advisable to wait until it has settled down before using sensitive equipment and not to suddenly put a heavy load on while using it for the lappy. for example.. a 3kw kettle..

The current Cummins Onan don't use inverter technology either .. from their specs

Voltage regulation: Exceeds requirements of
ANSI/RVIA EGS-1 ±10%
Frequency regulation: Exceeds requirements of
ANSI/RVIA EGS-1 ± 5%

so, on a 230v model it maintains the voltage between 227.3v and 232.3v and frequency between 47.5hz and 52.5hz

this is well within the tolerance of any electrical kit and as good as you will get with a domestic mains supply ..

You will not get that level of control on a cheapo genny at £65 from Aldi .. which brings us neatly back to the original question about cheap gennies and laptops and why there is a risk of damage..
