Generator

My little genny wasn’t up to running the house during the last storm (power lost for 4 days), so I bought one of these Generators Direct

That one is out of stock, but their delivery was next day as promised (you do need to phone and confirm the delivery though.

Big wheels and a good handle (elec start).

Is this quite noisy? Its a lot cheaper than a Honda but we have neighbours to consider. Thanks.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that not all the generators suggested in the thread may be suitable for sensitive electronic devices. The inverter generators should be OK.

Yes, I know a contentious issue!!!

Following the storm we are without mains power in the house. We are okay and the power company are aware. I am classed as "highly vulnerable" and there was talk of moving me to a hotel but that is not possible (ambulance transfer / medical equipment / special diet).

Anyway we are running essential stuff on our generator which we calculate to be about 23 years old and starting to show it's age. So although Jenny has served us faithfully for many years we probably need to replace her. The recoil starter has been replaced a couple of times and is on it's way out again. Difficult to fix in the dark :(

Anyone any recommendations? 3kw output ideally. Pure sine wave would be nice along with electric start and budget is around £1000 max.
Check if the new generator can work where you plan to put it. Many are not rain-proof so need a roof over them.

A roof isn't an issue 👍but good call.

Nothing decided as yet because I ended up in A&E on Monday after another fall. I tested positive for InfluenzaB and my other medical issues are showing worsening. They would have kept me in if I hadn't had flu but passing on flu is not on my agenda.

I've been confined to the house since New Year and don't see anyone so have no idea when and from whom I could have caught flu. It's a nasty thing so please try to stay clear and safe from it.

I think it would be pretty anti social on a housing estate with neighbours, we’re out in the sticks so not an issue for me. Any of the open frame genny’s will be “loud” but even the “quiet” ones are going to be pretty intrusive in a built up area.

We now have not one but two Igor generators.

Jenny has had parts from someone else's set adapted so she can be started ( no electric start) and the baby generator, ex-motorhome, we had loaned out has also come home having been serviced by the family that has used it for a year. The baby generator will run fridge/freezer but not much else.

So now we have to decide if we will keep what we have or upgrade.

Another issue is that our back-up battery didn't work as it was supposed to. The manufacturers claim a software issue. The battery should have given us several hours of power but gave none :(

The only person I can think of Helen would be the chap who delivered the emergency generator? I know you wouldn’t have got up close but your immune system must be pretty knackered so Martin might have transferred it . Just a thought. Timescale would fit.

I did wonder and he did come into the house.

I’m not blaming him of course as it’s so virulent he might well have not had any symptoms at the time and come down with it later. Poor you though to add to everything else. Another setback.

No I wasn't attributing blame either. He will have been in and out of so many houses and businesses he probably catches anything going or has a super immune system. We were just delighted to get power for a few hours.

I did have the flu vaccine but had no reaction to it which I normally get. The vaccine 60% effective???? Anyway all medical investigation / treatment suspended until I test negative which is a blow.....

My housekeeper is also down with flu but she hasn't been here since mid-December. I hope she soon gets better as she is self-employed although I always pay her if I cancel even with notice but many don't. She has no idea where she picked it up but I read that the virus can remain viable on textiles and surfaces for up to 48 hours so if she was cleaning holiday lets and touched the door handle going in....or even the handle on a shopping trolley. Her son still lives at home and phones her every afternoon to ask what is for tea.... I told her to tell him "whatever you pick up in Lidl". I was talking to her on the phone not face to face.

A small nuclear reactor is the best. With just 200g of fuel it powers the van for around 60 years, and it is clean power. Available on AliExpress at a reasonable price.

You do sound like you're having quite a time of it Puddleduck

Two waddles forward, one waddle back.

Sounds like you're made of pretty strong stuff though so I'm sure you'll get through.
Correct that. 😄
