Fiat Ducato 2.8
Hi,

Fiat Ducato Motorhome 2.8 - W258 CNW

My Fiat Ducato motorhome is crunching in 1st and 3rd gear, i have the box removed but am struggling to locate any numbers on the box. I have been told its either ML5T or MG5T but not 100%. I am planning on ordering a set of synchro rings and overhauling the box. I know that parts are getting hard to come by now.

Would anyone know if any box's from other models fit my motorhome, i have found a 20LE21 from a 1.9 boxer which looks identical but don't want to part with any cash until confirmed. Appreciate any help

It could go deeper than physical similarities.
Input shaft diameter and number of splines.
Different gear ratios.
Position of clutch actuator
Position and type of Speedo drive.
Reconditioning.....I wouldn't attempt it without the correct tools.
Tolerances are tight unless you want a whiney or rumbling gearbox.
A box from a recon specialist won't be cheap but worth it

I would be willing to purchase another box to save all the hassle and swearing however can not seem to locate one. First step would be confirming the gearbox code and going from there, I am getting conflicting information, ML5T, MG5T. Looks like the gears themselves are not available in the UK from what I can see, only 5th gear.

Thank you - can't find anything on the website but I'll give them a call first thing tomorrow and check.

Every transmission specialist I have spoken with locally to me is not able to locate any parts to repair mine.

You could try Gloucester road gearboxes in Bristol. They specialise in these. I had my Peugeot 2.5td 5speed box reconditioned about 18 months ago. I believe they have parts made in Spain.

Many thanks for this, was it a full overhaul you needed? I've been told it could possibly just be the syncro rings - I have just sent them an email but will contact tomorrow also to follow up.

Mine was a full overhaul due to the amount of wear. I drove it around for a couple of years with the dodgy box due to lack of funds to get it repaired šŸ¤·

How much did you have to pay for the full overall if you don't mind me asking?

Also OP, did you get sorted? I've got a 3rd gear crunch going up from 2nd and down from 4th. I've just found a company on eBay that looks like they may poss have the syncros but like you I'm trying to find out what gearbox I have.

I don't remember exactly but it was around Ā£2.5k. That did include a new clutch and removal/refitting. Apparently it's very common for these boxes to start failing around the 60,000 mile mark šŸ˜Ÿ
