GB or UK sticker

Haha, now those of you that are curious (or even bothered) will have to Google the meaning behind my last two posts 🤣

We used to have paper Royal Standards to decorate our sand stales (en Écosse). It’s actually illegal for a private citizen to fly one but luckily no one went round arresting the kids on the beach. I have SCO on my number plate and a white UK sticker.

But I'm going to take my UK sticker off fed up with people in Spain including expats asking where we are from.
I have made sure that we avoid that scenario Lenny. ;)

And just to make sure that there is no doubt whatsoever...........

Cheers,

Jock. ;)

I don't think Blighty is "Great" and I really don't think the UK is "United" so I've got "Portugal" on the back of my van...

JJ
Accept your point about "united" but "great " is simply to distinguish from little Britain ie Brittany and refers only to the main island and so excludes northern Ireland
I have UK on front and rear number plate plus GB oval and UK oval stickers. I used to have GB on the front as well so recognisable from both ends.
As your vehicle is presumably registered in Portugal it is correct that you display that as the stickers don't relate to the nationality of the people.

Just got the world’s smallest UK stickers on the number plates front and back,2k miles nobody gives a Barry White.

We'll need bigger number plates to accommodate all the legal crap shortly . When are we going to display the American flag?

Hi team, our van registration plate is simply just that. Does anyone have a definitive answer to the question…..

Do I need a GB sticker or UK sticker displayed on the back of the van for driving in France?

I have a feeling there will be a few different answers…….

Ta 👍
The change from GB to UK was at the request of the UK government so please no (more) Euro bashing...

That’s the confusion, some websites including Amazon are still saying GB sticker 😳
Of course they will ... they're still trying to sell of the old stock to the unwary! :giggle:

To apease NI as GB does not include them.
But every time you see a van from NI they have an IRL sticker on their van so we might as well go back to GB.

We've seen several UK cars in France without any country identifiers; I'm curious what the consequences are of not displaying one (I'm not proposing to take mine off).

Chockswahay I'm not sure you are taking this thread seriously :reel:
We sometimes see the SCO on vehicles for folk from our neck of the woods.
Occasionally ENG but never seen a Welsh one.
I know they are all just badges with no legal meaning.

I did not know about the requirement to have a sticker in Spain even though I have U.K. on the number plate. Pathetic rule making.

Having already paid for new replacement number plates I will feign ignorance if stopped

I think in some languages the translation is grossen Bretagne!

I might even stick an ÉCOSSE sticker on the back too so that no one confuses us with being from Tenerife 😳🙂

Please, no starting with the Celt / Gaelic stuff……back of my van isn’t large enough for the Welsh stuff my wife would like on it……got her to settle for this…….. (y)

Nothing to do with that. United Kingdom of Great Britain and Notheren Ireland is the official name of the country. It’s the last bit that caused the change.

There already have been numerous diverse opinions in previous threads on this subject if you do a Search.
;)

Don't see why there are any diverse opinions. It's quite straightforward and simple. See post #7. What's more odd is that people post questions on here rather than simply type the question into Google .

I think chances of being stopped for not having one are minimal. Maybe if you were doing something else more seriously wrong the. Thy might bring that up also.

UK is the legal one now. I have both on my van as I bought it just before the change over. (Although looking below I shouldn't have o_O )

From https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates/flags-symbols-and-identifiers

Driving outside the UK

If your number plate includes the UK identifier with the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack), you do not need a UK sticker.

However, you will need to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of your vehicle if your number plate has any of the following:

a GB identifier with the Union flag
a Euro symbol
a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales
numbers and letters only - no flag or identifier
If you’re in Spain, Cyprus or Malta, you must display a UK sticker no matter what is on your number plate.

If you have a GB sticker, cover or remove it before driving outside the UK.

this is unambiguous really…I’ve just got some UK with Union flag stickers for the number plate for use in France…AND additionally UK oval stickers for the back when travelling in Spain.

Also note, the formal size for the oval stickers is quite large. They are much larger the old GB sticker I had, they are around 18cm wide.

point of caution? There are apparently some dodgy suppliers of the UK number plate stickers. They apparently look fine but they are actually sticky paper covered in a thin plastic coating rather than 100% vinyl. They fall apart and looks like slugs have attacked them after they get wet!! Maybe fake reports or actual fake products but just to be aware.

I don't have a diverse opinion nor stress over it. I just bought one, peeled off the backing and stuck it on. Fortunately I have the skills to do that.
Many folk have a peculiar reluctance to put official stickers on their m/h's.
What's more odd is that people post questions on here rather than simply type the question into Google .
Quite agree. I assume that (understandably) many people aren't internet competent beyond basic email and social media message boards.

I think chances of being stopped for not having one are minimal. Maybe if you were doing something else more seriously wrong the. Thy might bring that up also.
In one of the other threads on the same subject many posts were saying the same. At Newhaven recently I noticed that around 1 in 3 of the departing Brit vehicles didn't have a UK sticker.

Just to add to the confusion - in the European games we are entered as "GB" not UK It seems we just want to change things for the sake of it

Whilst back in the UK recently we noticed some plates with a green stripe (electric i guess) some with nothing, some with a blue stripe, then the EU versions, then UK and then some with GB on…..

Frankly i can’t see anyone but the vehicles owner gives a toss although most were proudly displaying their private registration plates, yep i think the UK is number plate obsessed

VXman and Spriddler I’m not gonna take the bait…. I thought I’d ask on here (as well as do my own internet research) because I thought there might be others better informed than me and happy to help 😔
