Gaslow

It’s the nasty bit why say it when you don’t know? If someone is trying to make a choice they are looking for honest and accurate info to enable them to make an informed decision.
Tbf, the OP appears to have already made their decision as in Gaslow and no point falling out about pros and cons. I made an informed decision after weighing up all the options and, for me, Gaslow won by miles but obviously not everyone's choice

Thanks everybody for all comments. Lots to ponder. @Minxy Girl i like how you have done yours, am hoping i can have mine the same rather than drilling through the body work.

You really do NOT want them drilling through the metal body work! Much, much better to put it in the bumper/trim panels as you don't then compromise the integrity of the van (and cause warranty issues!).

that's doesn't charge the law (in Italy)

perhaps I should have said 'very unlikely' to get filled on the motorway .. there are plenty off posts by people who have been refused, both on Fun and other forums. so it would appear the law is not rigorously applied.. or people are telling porkies to the attendant,, ie. "it's for the engine." this may come in useful... " è per il motore". . if they suspect it is for gas bottles see what they say..

the information was for the OP so better to be aware if the potential problem than not...

Not heard the phrase "cheap & nasty" then?
Re-read my post: I said Gasit maybe,

then let me assure you.. .Gasit are neither 'cheap' nor 'nasty' .. they wouldn't be fitted as OEM by many major UK convertors if they were . List here

Gasit have two systems, the latest bottles are called

They cost more than the Gaslow equivalent

11kg (27 tr) GAS IT Plus Refillable Gas Bottle - (GI-VB-004). £215.02

Gaslow R67 11kg Refillable Cylinder No.1 £165.00

Re-read my post: I said Gasit maybe, whereas Alugas will be...
Hardly likely to be any difference between Gaslow and Gasit given that they use exactly the same bottles made in exactly the same factory. The only difference is the colour.

It is costly to have installed but hubby did ours years ago and were very pleased with it.
We’ve not had any problems refilling.
It’s certainly a lot cheaper than exchanging gas bottles and more convenient specially when abroad and at least we don’t give the gas company some gas back when we refill. As there is always a certain amount of gas left in an 'empty' bottle.

From Yorkshire by any chance ? ;)

On reflection, folks, I should've used "cheaper and cheerful" but didn't.
The "nasty" bit is, of course, my opinion. I don't like red.

for that price i would go for an underslung tank and gain the space in the van

So I suppose gaslow would be OK as they are yellow:rofl::rofl:

... and Alugas are nice 'n shiny.

We went for a Gasit 44ltr underslung tank with an external fill point and a bbq point. One benifit of an underslung tank is that you get the gas locker freed up. We store our bbq and outside cooker in it.

We have two cylinders fitted and would not want to go back to buying different cylinders in each country we visit, we also prefer not to have auto change over, as when one runs out it gives us ample time to fill up knowing we still have a full cylinder wherever we are.

We have refillables for convenience rather than cost saving. Lugging heavy cylinders in and out of the gas compartment and carrying them around to the shop is not something I want to do at my age. Bad enough having to do it for the home BBQ yesterday and that is only once every couple of years! It is much easier to drive the motorhome into a garage and fill up like you would diesel. We usually use a couple of apps to find garages on our route and rarely have to go far out of our way, especially in Europe.

Having said that I reckon we have probably saved enough in the 4 years or so we have had our system to pay for the initial purchase price (I fitted it myself). Bear in mind lots of gas gets wasted with calor type cylinders. We used to always make sure we had 2 full cylinders before going off on any long trip especially in Europe. That inevitably meant changing a cylinder with some gas still in it. Now I just fill it up and only pay for the gas that is needed.

Swapping for me, meant that I could increase my gas capacity. I could only fit 2x6kg bottles in my locker, but fitted 2x11kgs from Gasit in the locker. So nearly double the capacity. I don’t have room to up size in the calor range.

Gaslow comes standard with braided hoses I thought which is nice, but not worth the extra cost in my opinion.

Just a note........We have Gaslow fitted into our newer van from the old, fitted about ten years ago and it was mentioned by the installer that the bottle may need to be checked after 10 years , ours were an older vairiant so did not need to be checked.
Similarly we have had the gas pipe sealing washers changed as they were perished and leaked.
Very practical solution for us, no hassle and cheaper and simpler to refill, ideal.

I swapped my GasLow for SafeFill, to save weight. They also make it easier to prepare for a trip by allowing me to nip out and get them refilled by car. At other times, I fill from within the locker and have not yet been refused (or should that be “caught”?). I can use the spare bottle for a BBQ at any distance from the van without the need for an external gas point or long tube. I had forgotten the weight of the Calor cylinders and hence the extra difficulty lifting a full one back in, but I manage to lift the SafeFill ones without concern. SafeFill bottles are semi-transparent, so allow you to see the level of liquid remaining. I don’t find that so easy, so use the “two bottle” method instead (it’s time to get a top-up when the main cylinder becomes empty). The Truma DuoC remote indicator conveniently helps to alert you without visiting the gas locker by changing from a green light to a red one when the reserve starts to be used.

As the primary market for SafeFill is tuggers, not many motorhomers may be aware of that alternative.

@Minxy Girl any chance of a photo of your gaslow cover being open? I want to see the connection type/size please so i can take a pic to take to show the guy who is going to do mine. Thanks Ken

I'll take some photos for you today. :)

I’ve got a Gaslow system with the filler cap inside the locker. Just come back from touring Spain Portugal & France, didn’t have any problems filling up, most of the garages did it for me. I can’t see the point of having 2 cylinders, all you do is keep it topped up. Plus you’ve got more space for storage and less weight.

Do you mean the filler point? If so it's just one of these:

If you wanted to put it somewhere else you can get a straight one as well:

Her's some photos of when I had it in the FamilyScout where I placed it in the bumper itself:

And on what do you base that opinion on ?
Probably having spent more on gaslow and not wanting to look daft! (should have read to the end of the thread first......doh)
