Morning Funsters

i am thinking of having Gaslow installed in my Pvc.
I know some people have had it done can you tell me the benifits/downfalls etc if any?
Many Thanks

Ken

I've had it in my van for 6 years, can't think of any disadvantage to a safely installed system other than the initial cost, go for it.(y)

Hi Kenny, there are quite a few threads about this on the forum (including fitting one in PVCs) so have a shuftie for them, however the main pros/cons are:

Pros
:
  • Can top up in most countries
  • Much cheaper cost per litre
  • No need to carry non-refillable bottles for each country you visit
Cons:
  • Initial cost - if you can install it yourself you will save a lot of money (not difficult to do)
  • 'May' be refused filling at some place on the rare occasion but usually only if you have an internal filler (only happened to us two or three times since 2009 with an internal filler!).

For us, it’s the convenience as opposed to cost saving - unless you use a lot of gas, it will take years to recover the outlay.

Taking the various adaptors with you when you go abroad enables you to fill up anywhere (subject of course to the 16 year old controlling the pumps not taking against you and refusing to let you do it - never happened to us but it has to others on here).

For us it’s as much of a “must have” as solar panel, additional battery and a Vanbitz alarm..

If payload is a consideration it may also be worth looking at Alugas, the cylinders are much lighter than Gaslow.

Are you looking to fit bottles to replace your existing bottles or an underslung tank ?

Biggest benefit is not putting your back out lifting heavy cylinders and a equal 1st place being able to get gas in any country. Had refillables in all 3 vans, wouldn't consider not having them, cost is recovered quickly well it is for us being high gas users.
As said if payload a problem go for Alugas they make 6kg, 11kg and 14kg bottles.

We had a 11kg Gas-It refillable installed in our PVC about ten days ago. The system is virtually identical to Gaslow, but the bottles are red rather than yellow. And the price is a bit less.

'Get Gas' are relatively local to you, based in Bristol: https://www.getgas.co.uk/

As we live on the outskirts of the city we called at their depot in the first instance to have a chat, explain what we wanted and find out a price. The technician came to our house and fitted the system on our drive.

We were well pleased with the service and convenience, because they were so handy and offered a good value price for the whole job. We're set up for extended stays on the continent now.

Oh, and we've still got plenty of space for a 6kg Calor Lite bottle, as a back up (we've got 2 full ones in stock at home).

Good luck whatever you decide. (y)

Don’t look for a cost-benefit.:- There may not be one, unless you are able to put a price on hassle.

Refillables allow you to always go off with a known amount of gas on board (full) and also to refill abroad without buying local cylinders. Unless you use a lot of gas you may not recover the outlay, although you may be able to move them when you change vehicle.

Gas-it may be cheaper (and nastier). Alugas will be lighter (and more expensive).

Thanks everyone for the info, lots to think about!!!! Apple Campers are close to me so i'm thinking get them to do it as my DIY is not so good. Have been Quoted about £700.00 is that about right? That's twin 11kgs cylinders with auto change over & Euro adapter kit. I must admit the weight thing i had'nt thought about, DUH!!!

These are the recent quotes I had for Gasit from my local mobile installer, well, 70 miles away, so extra for the excess mileage:

1 x 6kg bottle & body mount fill fitted at your home £293

1 x11kg bottle & body mount fill fitted at your home £304

2 x 6kg bottles & body mount fill fitted at your home £449

1 x 6kg + 1 x 11kg bottles & body mount fill point fitted at your home £461

2 x 11 kg bottles & body mount fill point fitted at your home £479

I have 2 x11kg Gaslow R67 bottles with external filler.. not had a problem filling up anywhere yet.. but you can be refused, so always have that in mind and don't wait until both bottles are nearly empty .. as soon as one bottle is empty I look to get it filled up.. so keep a spare in reserve

Not mentioned..

Autogas is not widely available in remote parts of Scottish Highlands and none on the islands, so plan ahead... if going for a long trip it would be prudent to have space for a Calor bottle which is available just about everywhere.

Autogas is not available in Moroccan filling stations, although some have reported getting a fill at an LPG depot .. bottle gas is very cheap so may be useful to have an alternative method of using it ie BBQ point with bottle and regulator.. or a spare place in the gas locker.

It is illegal to fill up in Italy .. you won't get a fill up on the motorway , but smaller outlets in towns may turn a blind eye.

someone on here had some for sale the other day

Did you not see "may be"?
It’s the nasty bit why say it when you don’t know? If someone is trying to make a choice they are looking for honest and accurate info to enable them to make an informed decision.

And your knowledge of both products is very helpful!:ROFLMAO:

Whilst an expensive outlay we chose to go with it purely for convenience, 3 conveniences in fact:

  1. Can always leave for a trip with a full tank (no need to worry about swapping a potentially half empty bottle just to make sure you don't run out)
  2. If we do head to the continent we don't have to worry about incompatible cylinders (just make sure you have any necessary adopters)
  3. No need to worry about lifting tanks in and out (and more importantly no more headaches as the clips don't hold the flap open and it lands on your head )
We've only just had to do our first refill and we loved just pulling into our local petrol station, filling up and just driving off.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned which swayed our do we don't we, is that if you change vans you can take the system out and put it in your new van.

Our system, bought in 2009, is now in its fifth vehicle! (y)

Still awaiting an explanation on why Gasit may be nastier.

Not heard the phrase "cheap & nasty" then?
Re-read my post: I said Gasit maybe, whereas Alugas will be...
