Gas Or Electric Kettle?

Seeing EddieVanBitz's pic reminded me of an old Giles cartoon that had a similar number of power leads and adapters with a conventional kettle stood on top boiling merrily away.

not upsetting me at all, just pointing out I am answering the question asked, where mention WAS made about nice to have something that switches ITSELF off, and that is what a microwave will also do, but a kettle running off a gas ring will not.
As you quoted my post, it would be fair for me to assume you were replying to my post. If you were making a random comment, maybe make more sense to not quote a specific reply?

PS. capitals can be used for EMPHASIS. if I was typing in ALL CAPITALS, then THAT could be called shouting, but I was not :)
It's now getting even more confusing for me, an old man, as I have only been using this forum (or any) since lockdown and when I first started, I too used to use capitals to emphasis a word but was told that CAPITALS were the equivalent of shouting and that I should use the 'Bold' button.

Can someone please give a definitive answer on this?? 🤷‍♂️

I doubt if anyone will be so bold as it is now a CAPITAL offence to shout !

If full timing, then a rapid boil, quiet boil is more important for daily use. These Russell Hobbs ones really are quieter
Broken Link Removed
I had one of those for a long while however the top aperture is small and the lid can easily be caught on the tap when filling and pushed backwards, that's what happened to ours so when clicking to open it to fill it never opened fully on it's own so had to be done manually and was a nuisance so got binned. I currently have a nice wide aperture one which is much better IMV.

I guess it is down to the individual, but my take is as I understand it (rightly or wrongly)....

If a WHOLE post is capitals, then that would be considered poor form, shouting, aggressive, etc. and should be avoided on a friendly forum without a doubt
Emphasis I suppose depends to a degree on what device you are using (and access to style codes such as emboldening, italics, etc?). Not that long ago, a lot of forums were plain text only and at that time the only way to emphasis anything would be CAPITALS or to do something like *this* to highlight a word.
I tend to use capitals for emphasis as it both makes sense to me and it is much quicker to do then selecting formatting options.
The one style that makes absolutely NO sense (no sense?) to me is when you see something like "ThIs SeNtEnSe Is OdDly FoRmAtTeD" - what the hell is that about ???

OK in a nutshell

  1. Your blue plug is rated at 16 amp don’t exceed this, a 3000w kettle nearly does on its own
  2. Check the rating on the hookup supply and do not exceed this. a 3000w kettle does all on its own
  3. If your unsure of the rating of the hook up, ask! And then don’t exceed it
  4. If your determined to use lots of high wattage appliances on an extension lead (hook up) “Because I’m paying for it, leave a note in a fireproof box that your death is your fault as you ‘wouldn’t listen’ (Let’s face it, if you don’t listen its likely that your ‘Will’ seekers (AKA Family) will listen to the “where there is blame there is a claim“ (as they will have learnt from you) and go after the campsite owner (me) the bloke that sold them the van, or the last bloke that worked on the motorhome, even if it was ‘Sid’ from Kwikfit when he changed the tyre
  5. Take all of this with a pinch of salt as this is Motorhome Fun after all and should be a ‘giggle’
  6. As this is MHF no one cares about spelling, bold capitals or punctuation, it’s the gist, not the prose. The main rule is be nice and let everyone play. Irrespective of bold or capitals if it’s rude aggressive or condensing then you may think your basking of the glowing feeling of putting one MHF member down, not realising that 60 odd thousand other people think your a dick and are laughing at you
  7. Refer to point five
  8. Do not see a 13 amp socket and think your home from home is, we’ll, home! It’s not. Your actual ‘home’ is connected to the National Grid through some really thick wires
  9. If you home from home really is your home, ‘full timers’ do you really want to risk burning it to the ground overloading the electrical supply in a way it was never intended to be used? Because ‘I’m paying for it!’

we dragged two kettles around with us for a few years and realised how petty we were being with the idea of weve paid for it so were going to use it mindset and slung the electric one in the bin. It made the decision easy knowing that we seldom stay on sites

We have a small travel kettle, toaster and hotplate, haven't been used much at all but when we had a major issue and couldn't use gas they were essential so they are always with us just in case as you can bet if we take them out we'll ruddy need them! 😄

Forgot to mention, we saw the cutest little kettle today in Aldi reduced from €39.99 to €11.99, 1100w and auto switch off ... thought of you lot! 😄

Well I have to come clean and say that today we have used EHU!!! We haven't done so for many years, other than at home to cool the fridge before a trip, so finally carting all the bits and bobs around has proved beneficial. :giggle:

We're at a nice MH stop at Almeida, Portugal, with FREE electric. (y) We weren't going to partake of it but seeing as we'd bought some ice-cream lollies which were a bit 'soft' we decided that using EHU would mean the fridge would work a little bit better (gas is okay but not as good), we could then also charge stuff up and watch TV etc and not deplete our batteries, even though the solar usually tops them back up without a problem most days.

So after many years of carting electric stuff around I have FINALLY used my little travel kettle, I'd forgotten how good it is despite only being low powered, however we didn't bother getting the hob and toaster out so as not to be 'greedy'. 😇

We full time in our van and have always used the gas hob for our 1.7l kettle. to say it gets used a lot is an understatement, boiled for drinks, washing up and washing ourselves, in the morning it can be boiled 4 times for washing, shaving, and cups of tea as well as my flask for work.
We tend to only use the main water furnace when we shower, which generally is only every 2-3 days, yes I know some might frown on that but we strip wash every other day.

Só with the price of our bottled gas just gone through the roof 19kg propane £37.50 -£69.99 we talked about the option of a 1.7l 3000w kettle, we don’t pay for electric as is included in my work, wardens on site,

So a mid range decent kettle is around the £40 mark, but that £40 would pay for a lot of gas.

Now I’ve confused myself looking online with loads of technical calculations but need it explained to me simply, which is going to be more cost effective?

We do have refillable tank on the RV but as it’s parked up for most of the time it’s not worth driving off to refill the tank especially as there’s not one local.

Emma would love to have a kettle that turns itself off so she’s edging that way.

Whats your thoughts?

Shawn
We have Both

If you are wardens with free EHU use it!
We have done several summers in the past and everything goes on the electric, I really can’t see why you are using your gas for hot water and boiling the kettle on the gas.
We fulltime, when we are on a site (winter only) and paying for EHU we use the power for hot water, heating and quite a bit of cooking!

Except that CAMC are just putting up prices due to electric price increases. We'll be just paying for the wardens electric!!
