Gas bbq inside Awning??

Depends on the awning i guess?

A typical caravan, three sides a roof and secured to the van - definitely a no.

A typical MH awning without sides attached, i do all the time if its raining, certainly no risk of CO, and fire, well the awning is about 7 foot high, so no..and its raining!

We use a gas bbq all the time in the Motorhome under the awning it’s a roll out and no sides or front probably about 5ft from bbq.

Yes I saw this coming ..a lot of sites, even National Trust - Holme beach, ban the use of any flame bbq's. They often have helicopter spotting with loud hailers to make sure of fire risk.

Many sites now ban use of charcoal and flame bbq, for whatever reason.

That beside, I changed over to an electric grill for outdoor breakfasts.

Then roll up the walls, still dry but vented.
With a wind out there aren’t any walls so venting isn’t an issue.

I would never have cooked inside an enclosed awning.

Maybe time we came up with a new definition.

An awning is not totally enclosed (it must have a minimum of one side that can not be closed.)
And for the motorhome community, it is not free standing,
it must be attached to the vehicle to stay up..

A tent, by definition has the ability to close all sides.
It may have the ability to be free standing,

Therefore Gazebo's are "tents" even if the walls are not fitted.
Tarps are a "tent" if free standing, and an "awning" if structurally attached to the vehicle.

I agree with the principal. But we can't even agree what the definition of a motorhome or campervan is. 😅

What about a drive away awning?

I saw a chap next to us BBQ 'ing in his tent porch summer before last, I assume because it was windy.
The porch had the front open.
I commented to the Mrs that I thought that it was dodgy as hell and that I was glad that the wind was blowing away from us not towards us.
Anyway 10 minutes later the tent went up in flames.
I reckon it took less a minute to destroy the tent and everything in it.

A drive away "Awning" falls into the "Tent" category, as:

It is self supporting (it does not need a vehicle to hold it up)
It can be fully enclosed. (Even if one of the sides is the vehicle when it's in position)

Totally and absolutely predictable.

As every Scout knows (since the days of Baden-Powell) YOU NEVER COOK IN A TENT!

I have moved pitch before now due to unsafe cooking practices.
(After telling them, either they move the BBQ, or I'm packing up and leaving them to burn)

By the time they need my fire extinguishers it will be too late.
A full size enclosed Caravan/motorhome tent will be gone in 60 seconds

A hike tent will go in 20 seconds, VERY spectacular!
Especially when the air ambulance has to land a few minutes later

Some of the things I did when younger I'm surprised I'm still alive .

In my old vw days...once a charcoal bbq had died down it was brought inside the canvas free standing awning to provide heat 🤣. Long before in my tenting days , old camping gas stoves and lanterns used in tents all the time. Was nearly always raining in Scotland.

These days I do all my cooking inside unless I've got a fire going outside in which case I'll cook on that , don't use awnings nowadays though only the van sun canopy on sunny days to provide a bit shade.

I would never ever stoop as low as to use a gas or electric powered grill .....that ain't bbq lol 😆

We have all done plenty of stupid things over the years and luckily got away with it.
My wife woke up in a van while marshalling at Motocross many years ago feeling sick with a headache , she luckily realised it was the gas heater poisoning them and opened the doors , probably saved a few lives .
Charcoal is far more dangerous than gas , I think people actually forget that it wasn’t many years ago that tenants and students were dying in significant numbers because of dodgy gas installations.
Luckily most modern gas appliances actually have so many built in safety devices they pretty much protect most idiots from themselves 😂👍

I know i sadly lost a friend back in my vw days who fell asleep drunk in his vw camper with the stove on and never woke up. Alec Smith his name was from Falkirk, he was only in his early 30's , died at a vw show in Crail in 1996 ....sad times.

One of Dunfermline athletics footballers died of carbon monoxide poisoning in his house around the same Think his name was norrie Mccathie

The CAMC magazine the other month tried to conflate the two into "motorvan" 🤣
