Fuel consumption query

I'm a total anal retentive and maintain a very detailed spreadsheet that measures both miles per litre and mpg, the latter using 4.546 litres to the gallon ... Because I include all costs, including depreciation [writing the entire value off over 7 years, and then adding back the trade in allowance when I sell the vehicle], after 534 miles, Brunhilde is costing an entirely reasonable £36.97 per mile to run .... But these costs will fall significantly as the vehicle mileage climbs ...

Steve
Anal retentive? You ain’t kidding there then.

We have a Peugeot Boxer based 3.2 tonne with the 2 litre engine remapped to 126 BHP and it returns 27 MPG. There`s an issue with yours somewhere I suggest. How about a full to empty tank and work from that.

The spreadsheet also calculates the running costs for each year of ownership and on a per mile basis for each category of expenditure, and the same for the overall ownership life of the m/home [depreciation, insurance, road tax, servicing/repairs + loan interest], an average mpg for the period of ownership, and an estimated annual mileage from the anniversary of its purchase.

Victoria Wood used to do a sketch bemoaning her luck with the opposite sex at parties, saying that she was the one who ended up on the landing, sipping cheap lambrusco, and listening to the spotty faced male in the fair isle jumper telling me how easy it was to do his own conveyancing, and how interesting the technical processes were. I just did a quick adaptation for m/home ownership costs ...

I have just done a round trip to Haverfordwest I will be filling up tomorrow on the same pump that I used to fill up before I left I will publish details in the next few days. I have a Peugeot Boxer Class 3500kg 2007. Drive at 60mph when conditions allow.
As promised

Engine is 2.2 diesel

556 miles

Stopped on way home and put 30 litres in.
Got home Filled tank to full tank. same pump. 50 litres

30ltr + 50 ltr = 80 litres divide by 4.54 = 17.62 gallon

Therefore 556 miles divided by 17.62 = 31.55mpg

Total cost of filling at Tesco’s both times £109:02

I don't use the fuel gauge, far too haphazard! I filled the tank to the first pump' click' as soon as I bought the m/home and then repeated the exercise [even used the same pump ...]to the first 'click' again to get an accurate consumption figure ... A serious reason for doing this [and some of the other measures] is to use the mpg as an early indicator of any problems, such as sticky brakes. I have a Comments column on the spreadsheet for explanatory notes, such as headwinds, towing, mountain ascents etc, so that I don't panic about high fuel consumption without good reason!

I also track the cost per mile of depreciation and repairs/servicing; when the latter exceeds the depreciation figure, it's time to move the vehicle on, before I am left with an old nail ...

There must be something about Burstner owners who name their vans Brunhilde. We did exactly the same, both the naming and the spreadsheet! Our 20 year old Fiat 2.8JDTi averaged roughly 11.8 litres per 100km, so roughly 24 UK Mpg. Not too bad!

No problems, Ruby. I'm busy cleaning Brunhilde and restocking her for the Lochore Meet tomorrow at present. If you can wait until Monday/Tuesday of next week, I can email it to you. This will also give me a chance to tidy up any inaccurate formulae [I just overwrite the previous vehicle's data so sometimes date calculations etc throw errors, but I just fix them as I go!].

I'll PM you when we're back from the Meet, if that's OK? It's an Excel spreadsheet written in Office 2000 and free of macros and similar automations that might harbour viruses. It should work in Open Office but may require the odd formula 'tweak'!

That would be fantastic Steve, thank-you. Enjoy your trip and I'll keep my fingers crossed for fair weather for you all!

Dear all, we have our 2011 Bessacarr E420 and love it. It has a Fiat Ducati 2.2 Diesel engine. I expected to get more fuel to the gallon so was wondering if anyone else had done the maths. A 200 mile round trip is averaging about £100 in fuel. So £50 per 100 miles. I do the trip fairly often and now try and keep to 50 to 60 mph which does help but it still seems a lot of money. Does this sound about right please? Thanks
Hi allyoop...we have a bessacar E410 on a fiat ducato 2.2 turbo diesel..its a 2008 and has done 30000 miles..
We have just driven to spain from newcastle..1700 miles ( well,1696 actually )..we were fully loaded..2 adults plus 1 dog plus a full fresh water tank, or 1/2 water and 1/2 waste most of the time...we did go up lots of steep hills and mountain roads and I was driving at an average of around 65 mph..but sometimes at 70-75..a bit heavy footed at times..
We used 78.84 gallons..that works out at about 21.5 mpg....a bit disappointing as I thought I'd reach 30ish...going home I'm going to stay at around 55-60 mph see if it will be better....any one on here think 21.5 is bad considering the conditions...
Thanks ....

Given your admissions, not bad really. On the one occasion I had to push on hard mine was similar.
I usually stick to 2250rpm which is supposed to be the sweet spot for the 2.3 X250, 61mph indicated, 58 on satnav which keeps me out of the way of heavies and get 26-27 mpg - actual, not computer readout.

Our 2.3 Fiat auto 3500kg has average 30.5 mpg for the last 12 months & 9000 miles (according to the dash computer. We use it as our daily driver. I tend to cruise at around 65 mph on motorways and 55 on dual carriageways. Trip to Scotland on motorway we showed 44 mpg from Midlands.

It's the times you go faster we find similar if we push on . The drag increases with the square of the speed so as you go faster the drag increases really quickly.

I cruise at around 55-60. Varied terrain over three years has averaged at a whisker over 32mpg. calculated on brim to brim basis.
