French supermarkets selling diesel at cost price.

OK, now check their financial statements. Especially the profit part...
But they might sell loads of fuel at a small margin and still make a healthy profit. What it does mean is that even if the profit was nil there wouldn't be a huge reduction in the retail cost.

How do you get hold of a carrefour card, do you just pick one up in thd store or has it got to be posted?
In store. Also there are different types. Some ,like the over 65's card require an address in spain. Also be aware that a spanish carrefour card is no use in France carrefours & I would assume the same vice versa.
You can if you sell a million litres a day and you sell everyone that walks in some bread...milk...Post office series etc.

Your comment remind me of my old business partner said similar back in the day whe. I was buying a particular machine that churned out logo real cheap...he's no longer with us and that was many millions ago.

Tell Google you cant make.money off 1p margin

Many oil traders run on that sort of margin. It is all about volume
Yes I appreciate that but even my local bloke who owns the 4 garages* & the one I use which has a huge turnover & the lowest price of the 4,he has always admitted selling around 40,000/day due to the trucks filling.
He hasn't reinstated the "15c lower than everyone locally" that he did for years before covid. That got removed back then due to the gov.es 20c discount & of which they had to input 5c, which he said he, along with other garages , basically funded month by month as they were paying wholesale price for the fuel but then having to sell at a discount of 20c meaning at my one he told me back then it was costing him around 6k euros a day until gov.es refunded 75% on each months tax declaration.
Yes if you have huge volume 1p is enough. but most garages don't.

* In reply to the "don't use supermarket fuel" & agreeing with DuxDeluxe , The 4 stations they own are all run under 3 different brands. One BP, 2 Repsol & the 4th is a cepsa. The brothers run there own fuel trucks .When I asked years back he said all was the same except for additives in the posh stuff.

When I worked for BP. Petrol/ fuel we had to have ( obviously). But if we had no food in the shop that's bad😁 but if the car wash was off that was a sacking offence. The profit margin on jet washes was and probable still is phenomenal. When I was with BP back on the day a £5 car wash would cost BP 2p. That's what I call a healthy profit margin, or a rip off.

Tenerife surprised me. Uk was £1.45 derv, there was 1.19Eur.

And this is main road stations, not supermarkets.
That is because the Canarias have a different tax take & lower iva than the Iberian peninsular.
Amazing isn't it that you can transport fuel to specks in the middle of the ocean yet mainland europe the gov. take the p*** with tax & vat.

Following that logic motorways should be the cheapest place to buy fuel as the easiest to deliver to, i found Wales is often cheaper than England and the garages are a right old trek to deliver to!

Yeh an BP fuel goes to shell garages and vice versa..they all do.

They charge a premium cos they have you by the balls as we all wanna crack on with our journey

Rest assured that is a myth that its any worse Im afraid.
they come from the same refineries etc.
some add different additives but overall they have to adhere to the same standards and is the same gear
But the main issue with Supermarket fuel is contamination which happens regularly because the pumps/tanks etc are not looked after by the poorly paid staff. I have had to get my last car flushed because of filling up at Tescos 👿

There is far much more to it. You can make your margin appear to be whatever you want it to be.... And if you'd really like to confuse things, look at markup. The same cost vs. Sale price ends up with a different percentage, but it's the same thing right???

The proof is small independent stations are selling for much less than the big boys and obviously still making decent profits. They are doing no where near the volume Tesco is....

I paid €1.899\L on Monday in Brittany at E’ Leclerc but most places were €1.93-95 and some €1.99/L in the same area.

I would say you were a) unlucky, and b) fed a line by someone. I can catagorically assure you that supermarkets very much look after tanks and pumps much better than the average independent. Staff in filling stations (non-franchise) are paid just above minimums in both sectors.

Yes tanks can have issues, often just after a delivery as the residue can be stirred up by the fuel going in. That happens with BP, Shell etc as well on occasions.

The rules and regs around filling station operations are detailed and complex. There is no way the supermarkets would risk their reputations by not following them to the letter.

I know someone that has an automatic car wash attached along with a reasonable size shop.

The car wash is replaced every three to four years.
A service contract is also taken out on it.

Let’s just say he does very well out of it.

€1.73 in Germany today at an independent. Cheapest we have seen in past 3 weeks in Germany, Austria & Italy.

You can't run a business on a 1p margin.
That’s why in the UK you have garages now with supermarkets bakeries and sorts, handy waiting in the queue to fill up when the dummy on the pump goes in has a dump, does a bit of shopping then gets a frappo crappo latte and then goes up to pay🤬🤬🤬🤬

In the last week I’ve driven from Cornwall through wales and now at Sutton on sea and I’ve seen it from £1.54 to £1.72 so someone is making more then 1p…🤷🏼‍♂️
Be careful…. I think that icantremember is there for a few days shortly.

Ive seen a few at about €1.55/6/7 but thats the cheapest I've noticed.

I'm pretty sure you will know this but for the benefit of the less experienced in Spain:-
The automatic ones are generally cheaper, but not easy to fill at because you have to prepay at a machine so need to know amounts or trust them to refund the difference

We have bought diesel at 2 leclerc stations, one unmanned near nanacourt at 1.747 euros and the 2nd partially manned but pay at pump was 1.767.just north of Bordeaux.
Everywhere else was 1.95 / 2.20. So best check where your next fill up place will be..

Interestingly we have passed two Carrefoures recently, Lyon and near Calais, with diesel at €173.8 and €178.8. No idea why as all other local fuel stations where €195+

we saw €1.77 at a L’eclerc outside Brest and other L’eclercs in Brest at €1.809
