French supermarkets selling diesel at cost price.

quite common here, they operate on pennies or points of pennies margin as a loss leader AFAIK

I don't use supermarket fuel at any price, anywhere.
Rest assured that is a myth that its any worse Im afraid.
they come from the same refineries etc.
some add different additives but overall they have to adhere to the same standards and is the same gear

I wonder if this is to prevent any future rioting or fuel blockades again?

Given the retailers margin is so small it will probably make hardly any difference to the price. It's the same with the profit they make in general I saw an article this week about Aldi I think their profit margin was less than 2% hardly this huge retail rip off that some keep going on about.
Actually just looked it's actually 1.2%

We‘re on the ferry coming back from France and diesel is expensive everywhere there. Including those supermarkets which don’t seem any cheaper. Though did see 2.25€/litre on the motorway today!!

My mate used to flog tankers full for gulf.

.point Something of a penny difference between purchasing at 9 am or 11am etc makes all the difference when you are shifting tankers with 28000 litres in.

The garages make a penny if they are lucky

Total have capped all the fuel petrol and diesel they sell at €1.99 per litre.
Supermarkets are doing there own thing Le Clerc are starting the promotion at all of their hypermarket outlets this Friday and will continue until the end of year, other retailers are doing it at weekends and some are only going to do it at specific pre announced times.
Motorways are always the most expensive.
Average price here in Mayenne at moment is around €1.83 per litre for diesel

So what is the current price for deisel in France and Spain.?

Looking on fuel flash shows Northern Spain at 1.58 euros or £1.35

If your old school £1 a gallon cheaper than uk

Royan leclerc was 1.88 Euro just now

We paid 1.77 Euros in Sopelana Northern Spain yesterday, back in France today think I saw 1.99 at the local Intermarche

Spot on.… fuels and fuel quality was my business most of my working life, one way or another.

Fuel margins are on average about two euro cents per litre, said Systeme U CEO Dominique Schelcher, adding that the retail company's next at-cost fuel price promotion would be the first weekend of October.
If that is the case then the fuel tax & vat is far too high & should be cut.

In the Uk that went long ago.

You can't run a business on a 1p margin.
Bit less in Spain around 1.72 euro.
1,55 € here. .all the repsol & cepsa prices ,like you are quoting, are discounted using their Apps to at or below 1,55€.
My local garage , one of 4 family owned , sells at 15c under the above price.

Use a cepsa 'porque Tu Vuelves' card gets a discount , add in a Carrefour card gets another , pay with a mastercard gets another , & a carrefour Tarjet Pass credit card gets a 4th .
Buy at garage attached to carrefour , 1,56.9€ the other day gets it reduced substantially, 8% think it is with a carrefour card. Plus last weekend in each month, Friday ,saturday ,sunday there is a 10% reduction on that price
There is far more profit in it here the same as there is at least 1€ profit on cigarettes per packet.

How do you get hold of a carrefour card, do you just pick one up in thd store or has it got to be posted?

Travelled through Holland, Germany and France to get to Spain. All three countries were pretty much the same price at around 1.85 - €1.95 € litre. As I reported a few weeks ago .

Here in Spain, javea. The discount retailer near Lidl is around €1.58

Repsol is €1.72 or €1.62 with the waylet app.

I know a few people who have or have had petrol stations. They make/have made plenty of money from them.

The Asians around cities love a petrol station business too.

You can if you sell a million litres a day and you sell everyone that walks in some bread...milk...chocolate...Post office stuff etc. You see it all the time

Your comment reminds me of my old business partner said similar back in the day whe. I was buying a particular machine that churned out logos real cheap...he's no longer with us(surprise surprise) and that was many millions ago.

Tell Google you cant make.money off 1p margin
