not sure if this link will work from the UK but for the past 2 nights we have had a free wifi option that we then cant connect to as we have no passwords

even my basic French worked out to click on the bottom box but nothing then happens, not sure if it can tell we are non residents maybe

anybody else got further than me ?

@yodeli is this a service you know about please? x

There's an aire attached to a certain French campsite where the username and password for an hour's free Wifi relate directly to your ticket number as you go through the barrier.

So, this allows mean-spirited and unscrupulous people to work out what the previous few ticket numbers were and....

you just need to send me your name address DOB bank details card numbers and last three numbers on the card and i will send you the code

I know it's called Freewifi - but my understanding is that it's a service that you have to pay for!

It is not free wifi, it is just another supplier like Orange or SFR

The code is given by the accommodation/supplier/cafe etc and is paid for by them, the code will be different according to who is providing the network that you are picking up.

Been there done that.:D

I use Fon in France & Tourist offices, trouble with the tourist offices they nearly always turn their routers off for their 2 hour lunch break & when they go home.

If you follow the link, it says the service is only accessible through a Freebox (whatever that may be)o_O

thanks Sandra, we have never yet managed to connect to a fon in France

this has been made much worse by my thinking I had found a real deal, bought a sim only with 30Gb data, wont work, turns out three can tell whether its used in phone or mifi

waste of £22, but even the data only cards have really jumped in price, Bev bought a 12Gb card from 3 for £40 before we left, these used to be £22 o_O last year

Don't know whether you read French, @DavidG58, but the bit you posted asks you to enter the user name and password, which you set up when you first used the service.
Under the box, it says 'If you haven't got a user name and password, click here in order to subscribe to 'free' and connect immediately.'
Sorry, if I'm telling you something which you already know. :)

I did get that far, but cant open the link, but it would appear this is a French network called Free, clever or confusing, I know which I think o_O

Just put the data sim in your phone and use that. I need to catch up with your thread. I just know you are in France and thats all.

Sure ... but then it says you have to have a ADSL box by FREE at home to be allowed to use FREEwifi. FREE is a server just like Orange nothing to do with being free of charge.;)

This is it !(y)

You can’t use a data sim in a phone or a phone sim in a dongle, big brother is watching and knows!

However, Vodafone is the best in Europe (imho) and you can use all your uk allowance in France. Don’t panic ! There’s always MaccyD’s :p

"Free" in French actually means "Three", which apart from simply being the name of the company translates loosely to "Gotcha!". In the past people from the UK who misunderstood the translation assumed they were getting free wifi when in actual fact they had to pay three times as much as normal. Possibly.

@irnbru Sandra what I need to know is how to untether my phone from Vodafone

its a Nokia 520

before you all die laughing it is my old phone, I now have a much 'better' phone

Do you mean unlock it? Take it into a Vodaphone store and they should be able to provide you with unlock code if its out of contract. ...Or you can order an unlock code online for about £10

If you are staying put somewhere I can send you out an old phone I use when Im away.I can get it back when we meet up in summer.

thank you Sandra, not stopping still, but will be joined by friend in Nice I will get them to bring one out

can you then make that phone a hot spot?

If I remember correctly it depends on your plan.

It will say so somewhere in the settings. :)

Neither, if it was really free it would be called gratuit.
Remember, in France, they sometimes use different words to us, and when they use the same words, it usually means something else....
