I just spent an hour or so scraping the sand out from the gaps around this floor hatch. i had it open maybe two weeks ago but Moroccan sand had jammed it solid.

It’s in the middle of the floor next to the galley so gets a lot chances to eat dust :-(

Does anyone have a good way to keep this type of hatch free? Don’t really want a carpet over it which all I can think of.

Small mat from a local souk maybe?
This is what we did. We bought 4 small payer mats very cheaply in the souk and put them over the floor hatches (we had a double floor so lots of hathches)
the real problem we had with sand was the whole are between the two floors. With all the locker doors along the lower sides (Burstner Elengance) there was amp.e opportunity for sand ingress and because we occasionally found ourselves on piste roads in the South and the desert there was loads of it. And it was an impossible job to get rid of it no matter how many times I tried when I got home (it was a waste of time trying while still in Morocco)

You could try sealing both the raw edges with clear silicone, we use it to seal the cut edge’s on kitchen work tops to close the gaps from moisture.

I think I would put a small bead of silicone in the joint at the top and let it dry then use a trimming knife and cut down through the center which will give you a seal that can allow the hatch to lift out🤔

how about putting Vaseline around the hatch?

Think some of us misunderstanding the OP's question.
As stated #10 I read his question as the sand is getting into joint of hatch and therefore jamming hatch shut.. and not entering into the cupboard cavity as some seem to think.
I am of coarse prepared to be corrected if Jane And Rog could clarify. Ta!
You're right. Too late to delete my comment.

poppycamper you are correct and eddievanbitz has the correct solution. As we can’t actually do that I’m just opening and cleaning the hatch every couple of days.
I would also like to meet the Adria designer and punch him or her squarely in the face.
