Flashed by a speed camera at 62mph

PeteH
My own horror story with the DVLA was on renewing my licence, aged 70.

I stressed, in an enclosed letter, that I needed to retain my motorcycle entitlement as I had heard that some people had had it removed without their knowledge.

A week later I received a letter saying that they couldn’t renew my licence at all as I hadn’t enclosed my existing one.

Fortunately I had photographed my envelope, application and licence etc prior to sending it. I had also posted everything recorded delivery and photocopied my old licence before sending it.

When I rang them and told them the above they didn’t even ask me to send them the proof. They simply issued the new licence.

Cardiff or Swansea, their service is below par.

That is something I have made issue of for many years. Back in the 90`s. A good friend moved house and being a good citizen he duly sent off his licence to SWANSEA. On it`s return he failed to check it`s accuracy. Only when he Months later had a reason to look at the "new" licence did he discover that his Motorcycle entitlement was missing. After a prolonged "discussion" with DVLA, they adamantly refused to re-instate it saying they had no record!. Not only was he forced to do a re-take. he was also restricted to low power for a period!. So his Suzuki sat in the shed for over a year!. Unused, whilst he had to buy a Fizzy to get to work!.

ALWAYS Photo copy and Register documents sent to DVLA. Is my advice You cannot trust them.

Just back from three weeks across Europe and I think I saw approximately 1 police car on the motorways through 7 countries and 2500 miles! Plenty of fixed speed cameras in France, dozens of 50kph cameras in Italian towns around lakes, a few on German (non-autobahn) motorways, not one mobile camera anywhere, but did see a flash in Switzerland, don't know if it was me as in three lanes of virtually standstill traffic through roadworks, so not sure exactly who got snapped! Did find that on German autobahns, speed limit does kick in and out all over the place, my Sat Nav couldn't cope with all the changes and just stuck with no limit! Tip for crossing into Italy from Switzerland.....pretend to be a caravan or coach and use the dedicated lane. Other traffic all stacked up, I just feigned ignorance and drove straight through without a second glance, even got waved through by border control as soon as they clocked the Vignette sticker on windscreen. Saved a good 30 minutes in traffic!

What worries me about the OP, a Pilote owner with a similar vehicle to me, is why they were only driving at 62 mph ?

Motorways in France cost a great deal and should only be used when wanting to get from A to B in a hurry.

So why the slow speed ?

Motorhomes can go up to 130 km/h (80 mph) or 110 km/h (68 mph) if raining on Motorways and if you want to dawdle along you might as well use D roads and save quite a bit of cash while admiring towns, villages and the French countryside.

As to the speeding flash – we get flashed almost every time we go over there but because we keep within the many speed limits we've not been fined despite driving in France for many years.

By the way, not a lot of people know this - but Troyes is 'twinned' with Chesterfield (Derbyshire) and both are well worth a visit (Advert over !).
I don't call 62 mph dawdling ,, 58 to 60 is fast enough on any motorway for me.BUSBY?

its 3.05 ton the speed limit not 3.5 ton so depends if your on a single track rd its 50 mph

If you're going to go that slow on French Motorways, and pay good money for the privilege, why not stay on the D roads and save a fortune ?
?

I personally drive at a true 52mph on autoroutes, I use N & D roads when suitable, many are a pain the arras, speed humps, chicanes, roundabouts........I know what most of rural France looks like.

Cruise control on, armrests down, relax and I can enjoy the drive remarkably stress free and less tiring:)
