Evening all. Tomorrow I’m going to have a go and fill my Gaslow system for the first time. I’ve only used about half of the first cylinder but I thought I may as well give it a go.

I know I have to ensure both cylinder valves are closed off and that they only fill to 80% but is there anything else to be aware of? Any hints tips or tricks?

Cheers in advance.

Rick.

As it fills watch the pump for the auto stop and when it stops that's it - it's at 80%, you can not squeeze any more in.
Don't touch any metal parts of the gun with your hands, you could get cold burn. Keep your hands on the plastic protection areas.
When you release after filling there will be a release of gas from the connection point - that is normal.
Remember to grin when you pay considerably less for your gas than you would have done for a Calor type exchange....

Some pumps have a minimum spend, I normally wait until one bottle is empty before filling to make sure I meet the minimum spend.

Make sure to use a different cylinder each time you fill up. If you always use the same one there is a danger the other one will overfill. In theory the 80% cut of should prevent this but we are told by those who know that a little gas can squeeze past the shut off valve on each fill so best to alternate which one you use.

The 80 % fill isn't something you can control as far as I'm aware. Much like the auto shut off with petrol or diesel.

The most disconcerting bit is the escape of gas as you disconnect. I must have done it 100 times but despite expecting it, it always make me momentarily jump. The other thing is to absolutely sure you have properly locked the nozzle on before pressing the deliver gas button. Do it so the offset weight of the nozzle tends to lock on rather than undo. It's between and eighth and a quarter turn from engaging the pins of the bayonet to being locked on. It's embarrassing and noisy if you press the button and it jumps off. No need to wonder how I know! :(

Pump doesn't always completely shut off but slows right down stop filling then or you can override the 80% cut off valve.

I'm a 'ruffy tuffy' when it comes to emptying or filling things with the van.

You WON'T see me in Marigolds emptying the cassette, BUT!!!

You WILL see me in thick gardening gloves, (I've been promised something even better for the future) when I'm dealing with filling the van with gas.

You see, you're not putting gas in the bottles. You're putting a super cold liquid in and if that liquid, (or even gas) comes into contact with your fingers, your piano playing, or even nose picking days are over. It's nasty stuff.

I have even gone so rash as to have proper cryogenic gloves. A little more than gardening gloves but I don't do gardening except in an advisory capacity.
That's what I've been promised by a 'Governor' swilling, Benidorm staying, Funster. (Haven't I Peter!)

All the outlets we've used ( a grand total of five , two in the UK) all insisted on them operating the pump so other than as an observer I've never done it but as others have said. Once it slows filling stop , don't stop prematurely or it will reset and some places have a minimum spend of £10 . It all seems fairly straightforward provided that you have the correct adapter if you are abroad.

This also keeps the valves and floats working in each bottle.

Make sure you keep pressing the button to fill gas don’t just push it once and then leave it, than stand there for five minutes looking like an idiot because it’s not filling 😜, don’t ask me how I know this it is still seared into my mind 🤭

I've only got one 6kg refillable, with one full and never yet used calor. So I top up whenever I pass a lpg pump and rarely spend as much as a tenner, which does make me wonder why these busy garages bother selling lpg. I've never come across a 10 pound limit though.

Several times I have made myself look foolish by just not waiting long enough for filling to start with the button held down. Sometimes it takes a full 30 seconds before the machine starts up. Sometimes the desk attendant has to remotely switch the machine on. I’ve read that you should close the gas bottle tap ( even if it’s a “drive-safe”) as the initial pressure surge may damage your regulator. I do this before arriving so I’m not messing about in the gas locker on the forecourt. I’ve come across at least 3 types of trigger locks: Obvious, fiddly and auto. Sadly, many pumps are now looking antiquated.
Curiously, I’ve never used gloves. Even unscrewing the adapter. Maybe my old fingers are so dry they don’t freeze :)

All of the above but two things always grab my attention!

As mentioned above a number of times is the gas discharge blast when you disconnect, like others it still startles me but what really gets my attention is the neglect in this know all, modern world, is the number of other users who wander through the pump filling area using mobile phones, which may or may not present a fire hazard with petrol fumes but do make me very nervous when a small cloud of LPG discharges into the same area.

I've also witnessed people not only with VAPES but with a cigarette on the go in the pump area.

So as a point I am always waiting for an abscence of people before I disconnect.

The other thing about LPG filling is of movie heiracy, almost always on the LPG pump the fill button and if there are instructions, it mentions Press the Red Button!

Well for me pressing the Red Button is what you do to blow something up!!!! :giggle: :giggle: :giggle: :giggle: :giggle:

A great place to fill up your Gaslow tanks is Brownhills motorhome dealer just off the A1 at Newark. It is done by the shop assistant and there is a very nice café for breakfast/lunch and a good accessory shop.

I have an old pair of leather gloves that I always wear until the one time I didn’t and the temperamental Right hand side LPG pump at Podimore services decided it would dispense when it wasn’t connected properly. Normally that side won’t dispense at all!

Ran over my hand, I was very brave. It only blistered . I was very lucky. Funnily enough I haven’t forgotten since.

You’ll be fine but wear gloves.

I think all the pumps I use, it would be difficult to hold the connected end at the same time as pressing the button. I still wear the gloves as I have known it splash a small amount when disconnecting. Also the locking lever at our local Morrisons hasn't had a sleeve on for ages. Grab it to release when you have dispensed the gas, and it's flipping cold!

I’m not sure if you were referring to my post but in case you were, I wasn’t pressing the red button, I hadn’t got that far. I was connecting the nozzle to the van which is why it was so alarming. I reported it but the attendant just looked at me blankly.

I have to admit with a very red face , I hate doing it , but did it at Bristol and the gun was sooooo easy, slotted on twisted and disengaged, simples.
I was very happy not to play the Pathetic girlie scaredycat card And Was quite proud of my self :dance2:
Didn't last long first Spanish fill and a tall dark handsome spainard helped me.
Then his bueatiful female partner got out and filled there car in seconds
Back to Pathetic girlie :crying:
