On 4th van so not a total newbie....
Well today after leaving Gibraltar aire, we moved along the coast to marbella, not being able to find a decent aire, we thought we would try a bit of "luxury" and go on a proper site!
Bloody nightmare, so cramped, in amongst trees, so you have to dodge the trees from scraping the roof, very sloping so would be difficult to level, and almost impossible to access (fair enough we are slightly larger than most at 8.5m tag)
There are obviously a lot of long termers here, and to be honest they look like the tent cities at calais, with ripped, dirty tarpaulins draped over to provide shelter.
We have ended up parked up the top in the car park with half a dozen others.

Are all sites like this? Think I'll just stick to aires!

Not all by a long way but yes there are a lot and plenty are Spanish they do take liberties when allowed to and turn a 12’ Tourer into a mini bungalow that can sleep 12 😳 it’s what they do so you accept it or become methodical in researching your choice.
Camperstops are best limited space often but more regimented and less families and kids without a doubt.

We don't always use sites, (unless in England) but to strike them all off 'cos of one poor one in Spain, especially with a big thing like yours is a bit misleading.

Probably not, but then I haven't stayed on a Spanish site.
However, you could always come back to Blighty, to the 6 or 8 degree temrature, heavy rain, mist, fog, heavy morning dew, dark mornings and evenings getting earlier by the day, or stay put, endure and enjoy your probable 20 plus degrees and some sun.
I know which I would go for right at this moment shanty town or not.
Just my choice though.
And I would LOVE a massive van.

Sounds like Cabopino, certainly not a luxury site, the only good thing is the Italian restaurant at the entrance.
And the cloudless sky.
The sun.
And it's warm.
And you are not at work.
And in a lovely van.
And with a cost of living much better than the UK.
What's not to like.
I'll happily swap yer for a week or 3.

Haha, you picked the wrong site obviously. We’re out for five months split between two sites and half a dozen Aires all been to before and very comfortable.

We are at camping La buganville, the weather has today turned lovely, the best in two weeks, this afternoon has been sunny and about 24' just feel annoyed that we have stayed on a lot of nice free or cheap aires, and now have to pay the "princely" sum of €24 to park in a carpark.
Maybe we'll persevere and try more.

I thought a proper site would have a bit more space, it seems not.

Is that with any services, ie water, waste, ehu, showers, etc etc ??

Not only are there good sites in Spain but Andalusia in particular have a number (18) of paid for Aires that are of a good standard. I love this area.
Some Spanish campsites include every luxury and are inexpensive. e.g. The site between Mazaron and Mazaron Port by BP station, include swimming pool, electricity (paid), and waste water drain to connect to on every plot.

Yes, waste is in a difficult to access drive over/car wash, (or in the bushes!) toilet emptying from what I can find is 1 (although someone else has quoted 2) point, toilet block is good in fairness, not sure if you have to pay for showers? Ehu is 16a.

We've been to that one and will return this trip, it is superb and was only about €15.

For 19€ a night we are on our own pitch with leccy, the toilets and showers have two cleaners from 08.00 till 23.00, the place is spotless, lashings of hot waters in all showers and sinks, washing up sinks, launderette with driers, restaurant, on the beach, you picked the wrong one.

It’s usually easy to check a site these days before you book, sometimes even what your individual pitch looks like/dimensions/views etc. I’m a fan of ‘proper’ campsites and have yet to be disappointed.

Still not bad for 20quid a night is it?
Water, waste, leccy and washing with the bonus of warm weather.
Try pricing a few C and CC sites or C and MH ones around this time of year, or even in the summer if you want, hopefully, warm sun.
Probably looking at double your pricing, and at this time of year its cold, wet, damp and dark.
I know where I would rather be at the moment, and in a nice big van.

The site we stopover at Caceres is different with nice pitches each with its own toilet/shower building and a motorhome wash bay at the top and a shop and cafe near the entrance.

No, all sites are not the same and in U.K. most have good size pitches with 6m spacing between.

I find the tree situation unacceptable, why have a Motorhome site with trees that could damage your van. Makes no sense.

Except it’s not a Campsite but a Camperstop, probably the best one with large plots in the whole of Spain, sadly in the middle of nowhere.

Which site are you on?

And no, not all campsites are as you have described, though it is true there's a number that are.
Most Spanish ones we've been on are and they also have a tendancy to put big concrete blocks with lampposts in right in the middle of pitches or the access roads (don't ask me how I know 🤣🤣🤣🤣)

A lot of campsites in the south of Spain are as you describe, made worse by the lack of greenery in the region.
We like Camping los Escullos.
