In San Sebastian and got chatting to a Dutch couple who stated that theirs was one of the first electric motorhomes off the production line in respect of the engine.

They live full time off grid and everything is electric….,,cooking, heating etc.

They have 1000watts solar on the roof.

I can't see any way that a 1000watts solar on the roof will provide anything meaningful for running the traction motor for any distance when you subtract the power requirement to run everything electric on the habitation side of things to remain off-grid without plugging into a charging station on very regular basis.

I think they regularly use chargers but they are able, due to the huge amount of leisure batteries , to charge the vehicle batteries when required. Love the technology. He has a Victron 3000/12 Multiplus on board.

The cost of all the batteries is through the roof. Never mind the weight.

But many EVs run on 600vac.....how do they manage that from 12v batteries

I assume the drive batteries are completely separate from the leisure side. Or the 12 volt side is transformed down from the drive battery?

Yes, the leisure and drive batteries are in separate systems.

60,000 Euros……?!? o_O o_O o_O

i'd say off grid vanners currently call at fuel stations to fill up with diesel so fair enough if these folks have to use mains chargers for the drive system. IF they can emergency transfer power from the habitation batteries to the drive system, how much range could they get? Cant be very far but maybe enough to get to a charger

He said he gets enough to get to the nearest charger.

Imagine where we will be in 10 years time!

My take on BEV motorhomes: all motorhomes are built on base intended for or derived from a commercial vehicle. I don't believe this will change so the practicality (or otherwise) of a BEV motorhome will be entirely determined by the range deemed acceptable by commercial users of the chosen base vehicle. IMO that may not be the range required for the way motorhomes are used at present.

Ah -found this which summarises their electric. Pleasant surprise to find these short info clips rather than the overly long rambling videos many you tubers make!

Off-grid but re-charging at campsites ................ not total my definition of off-grid. :ROFLMAO:

Recharging the drive batteries? Well, it's no different to going and filling up with diesel (just slower). By that logic if you use diesel for your engine you are not truly off gird either!

Think the closeness of parking on that site leaves a lot to be desired 😂

Fairly typical of off grid 'camper parks' in Germany, Spain, Italy. Not a camp site but then the fees reflect that.

Not for me then 😂😂😂
Just does not look safe for the use of gas appliances in such a close proximity .
Give me my 6mtr space every time, even with the occasional “ Colonel Blimp” site warden.

Comes in 2 versions, 47kw ev battery and 79kw. That will take lower charges via AC or fast charge via DC. say 155 miles range (empty) so will be less wonce the have aded all the MH weight.

What baffles me is why have weight and cost another 96ah of leisure batteries with UP TO.....1885kg payload..... when you could surley have the ability of running from the vehicles ? Gromett

He told me it had to returned to Fiat recently as the batteries on the vehicle side were faulty. 60000 Euros to replace. Covered by warranty.
I will steer clear for now.
How much to replace a Diesel engine? Maybe 10,000 !

I know which one I’d stick with.

One for the clever folk.
Assuming 1Kw of solar for 10 hours a day. Does that put 10 Kws into the batteries?

In other words, how many miles are achievable from 10 hours sun?

none, the solar is just for the 12v electrics, that amount wouldnt even make a scratch in the drive batts.
they ae planning on just 75-100 miles per day and recharge either as camp sites or public chargers
