Hi.
There is a smell of Smoke here " Santa Comba Dao ". We have a neighbour who is in Coimbra Bombieros centre so she can report to us. There ARE FIRES in the " Nellas " region close to Manguelde which is on the Motorway and some to the South of us. Nearest one 20 odd miles away
If you are in or coming to this region seek advice from the GNR if and when you see them, they will have a complete updates. We were here in 2017...It takes no prisoners

Hi again.
Just got an " app " to download........fogos.pt IF you are computor savvy you can do this. It is supposed to show where the Fires are and how bad.
Tea Bag.
PS. Just got a message from fogos.pt Lines are busy, call again later.

Just on the outskirts of Lisbon (20 mins from airport) waiting for my VIP's plane to land... once he gets to the carousel I will make my way to the madness and pick him up.

No fires spotted on this trip.

I use Fogos.PT too.

(It is bloody hot...)

Hi, we are at an aire called School Motorhome Park,
44 Avenida Cova do Ouro
3440 Óvoa
It is just south of Viseu. There have been huge fires in this area of Northern Portugal, with clouds of ash and smoke billowing everywhere. The road to Aveiro on the coast has been badly affected and Castelo Branco has been subject to fires too. I suggest the area be avoided as high winds are making the situation very difficult in this whole area and the authorities have appealed to the EU for fire fighting assistance.
This aire normally is really excellent.

Thank you Tea Bag for posting this as we are in the picos at the moment and was planning to come to northern Portugal, but will now revise our plans and give it a miss, there's always next year

Left Chaves this morning on the N2 and saw a huge fire developing to the left and the air was full of smoke. Carried on down to Vilneu and the air was getting worse. Decided to head to the coast. We are in an air in Figueira da Foz and although you can still smell smoke it’s better than it was!

The Zoom Earth app has "live" Satellite views of the area although they haven't been updated since around 07:00 hrs this morning yet.
This was the situation yesterday afternoon.

They do say that they're not up to date...

Terrible. The Bombeiros are also mainly (80%+) volunteers.

My Brother is quite a bit South near Nazaire but they had a bit of a scare when a car caught fire nearby, the fire fighters were quick to extinguish it before it spread.

We made a run for it today, dreadful journey as so many roads we closed. Now near the Spanish border debating whether to cut out in to Andalucia or press on in Portugal. We are the blue dot in the picture.

I don't know if this helps or not but as HKF has mentioned it shouldn't be used to take decisions on emergencies.
This appears to be the situation today.

Picture from The Times. We came through the area nearly two weeks ago. Glad we missed it. Friends sent a video of them driving through a fire hit area - it looks terrifying.

Still here in Figueira da Foz and the smoke in the air is getting worse. Was hoping to move on to Albafeira tomorrow but it looks like the roads are closed. Will need to check in the morning.

We were unable to get to Figueira yesterday and also drove through burned out areas still burning in places. I used to be a firefighter so I was have fascinated and half aware we needed to go. We are going to try to get to Evora today, if we can do that we should be fine to go south. Otherwise we will call it a day and head into Spain.

Stay safe all of you. Is JJ OK? Don't recollect seeing him post on the subject.

fingers crossed you'll be safe there..
assuming the bulk of the fires are north of you?
hope everyone else living or holidaying there are safe too..

.
I survived the huge fire around QMJ (when 69 people died) some years ago (2017) and I reckon "lightning doesn't strike twice"

Left Figueira this morning and had an easy drive down to Albufeira. On an aire/site 9 euros a night all in!
